Game Changer: NBA Nears Landmark Deal with Amazon Prime Video, Reshaping Sports Broadcasting Landscape

In a big move for sports TV, the NBA and Amazon Prime Video are close to making a deal. This deal would make Amazon Prime Video a major place to watch NBA games. People who know about the talks told The Athletic about this. It’s expected that Amazon Prime Video will show lots of regular season and playoff games, maybe even some conference finals. The deal will probably last for at least ten years, starting from the 2025-2026 season The details aren’t all decided yet, but everyone involved thinks they will be soon. The NBA, Amazon, and ESPN didn’t want to say anything about it. The NBA wants three companies to be part of its new deals, but they might add a fourth. Right now, the NBA has deals with ESPN and TNT Sports, which pay about $2.6 billion on average. These deals end after the 2024-2025 season. Amazon and ESPN are talking about their deal, leaving Warner Bros. Discovery (which owns TNT Sports) to compete with NBC (owned by Comcast) for the last set of games. Warner Bros. Discovery can try to match deals, but NBC might make it hard. The current deals will change a bit to include the third partner. For example, ESPN might show fewer games, from about 100 to about 80. Amazon might show games on Thursday nights, where it already has NFL games. The NBA usually doesn’t have games on Thursdays during NFL season. Amazon might also show lots of playoff games. Amazon is interested in showing games globally, which the NBA likes because it’s part of their plan to make deals worldwide. The NBA wants to be a leader in streaming, so they’re focusing on that. ESPN, Amazon, and the NBA think they’ll make deals soon. Now, it’s up to TNT Sports, which has shown NBA games since 1984. They’re competing with NBC, which used to be the main partner of the NBA before 2002. NBC, with its streaming service Peacock, wants to get back into the game and is competing with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports for a deal. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

While watching the IPL, name the technologies used in cricket

IPL 2024 is underway. The tournament’s business end has commenced. While the bowlers are getting pummeled all over the field, the batters are plundering runs at will. While it is understandable to have sympathy for the bowlers, the T20 format is becoming increasingly difficult for them. In the IPL 2024, not even technology has been able to help bowlers. Speaking of technology in cricket, instead of just enjoying the IPL 2024 from the comfort of your home, why not take a closer look at all the many technologies used throughout a match? Here’s the complete list: a) DRS: Officially called the Decision Review System, but the unofficial name is Dhoni Review System largely because of the accuracy with which Mahendra Singh Dhoni aces the review, much to the astonishment of his fans. Some of the tools used in DRS are ball tracking, Snickometer, front-foot technology, and smart bails. Ball tracking is used to define the trajectory of the ball, with the help of a series of cameras, thus helping the umpires with close LBW calls. Smart Bails are stationed at the top of the stumps, and glows when they make contact with the ball, helping the umpires with run-out decisions. Snickometer was developed in 1999, designed largely to help the umpire whether the ball has hit the bat or not? b) Ultra-edge: Also called edge detection, the ultra-edge determines whether a ball has made contact with either edge of the bat before being pouched by the fielder. c) Spider Cam: Watching the game up close with the Spider Cam has become the new norm in cricket. Basically, it is an HDD camera suspended through kevlar wires, thus helping the fans to watch the game from three different angles. d) Speed Gun: This gun determines the speed at which a bowler has bowled a delivery towards a batter during a game. Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar holds the record for delivering the fastest delivery in an ODI match at 161.3 km/h against England in 2003. e) Pitch Vision: This monitors a bowler’s individual ball’s length and bounce rate. It is extremely useful for bowlers to bowl accurately during a practice session. While the advancements in technology have been endless, the game has certainly become more exciting and, to an extent, a fair one with their introduction, reducing the unbiased nature of the home umpires in the past. Fair or unfair – that’s for the players, the ICC, the umpires and the referees to decide.

IPL 2024 : What’s the science behind power-hitting in cricket?

With the way batters are dispatching bowlers all over the park in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, it would be considered very brave of someone to aspire becoming a bowler.  The IPL fixture at the Eden Gardens involving the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Punjab Kings on March 26th, highlighted the lack of balance between the bat and the ball.  Bowlers from both the sides were helpless and stood no chance when willow wielders like Phill Salt, Sunil Narine, Jonny Bairstow and Shashank Singh were on a rampage.  A brutal hundred from Bairstow combined with Shashank Singh’s whirlwind knock helped Punjab chase down the highest score in the history of IPL in just 18.4 overs.   The assault forced Ravi Ashwin, considered as one of the modern-day greats vent out his feelings on X, and wrote “Save the bowlers” someone plsss #KKRvsPBKS #IPL2024”, making the audience think about the challenges bowlers face in cricket. Power hitting in the IPL has been over the roof IPL 2024 has already seen more than 700 sixes so far in the last 42 games and the count still goes on. The last game between KKR and PBKS itself was a record breaker with 42 sixes, making it a t20 fixture with the most number of sixes.  Sunrisers Hyderabad is the team with the most number of sixes in the tournament so far with over 70 sixes already. Indeed, power hitting has been the talk of the town in IPL 2024.  Power hitting has been helping batters target beyond the boundaries. With Strength and conditioning playing a crucial role in enhancing power hitting among the batters, guys like Travis Head, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, K.L. Rahul are tonking sixes at will.  By focusing on exercises that build muscle strength, explosive power, and overall fitness, these players are able to generate more force when striking the ball. Improved strength in the legs, core, and upper body is allowing these batters to maintain balance and stability while executing powerful shots.  In The Sportz Planet’s exclusive interview with Dr. Siddharth Unnithan, he said “hitting a six is not only about big power. Earlier it was considered about power. If you see the most hefty and strongest people like M.S.Dhoni or Yuvraj Singh, they all had huge power, and that’s how they could hit the six, that’s what we considered. But then now we are seeing that even normal people can hit sixes.  So sports science has found out that it is all about momentum. And momentum is all about velocity and mass. So it is all about bringing the best.” He later added “if you have a good bat lift and a good downswing, for example like a person like Sehwag, who had a very good bat lift and a down swing. That’s what made him hit the ball sweetly. That’s what is converting a lot of success. That’s a major sports science aspect you can say; the momentum  and the downswing. More than the power.” While Dr. Khyati Vakharia said, “A lot of sports have shifted from heavy muscular built to lean muscle. That’s the body you build when you train for maximum strength vs training for hypertrophy and submaximal. There is a whole training shift. So athletes have become more powerful and even look leaner.” Power Hitting – described in a nutshell Power Hitting is all about science, embodying a symphony of physics and biomechanics. It’s not merely about brute force, it’s a finesse born of scientific principles.  The transfer of energy from the bowler’s delivery to the batsman’s swing involves the laws of motion and leverage. The sweet spot on the bat, its angle upon impact, and the velocity of the swing all determine the force with which the ball will be propelled.  Biomechanical analysis delves into the optimal stance, grip, and body position to maximize power while maintaining balance and precision. Understanding the aerodynamics of the ball aids in timing shots and directing them with accuracy.  In this fusion of science and sport, power hitters master the art of harnessing kinetic energy to send the ball soaring across the boundary. With cricket revolutionizing every season, there’s no doubt that it’s the science that is proving to be the real game changer in the sport.  The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

Premier League 2024 : Ethan Wheatley’s Manchester United debut makes him 250th Academy graduate debutant

Ethan Wheatley went on making his Manchester United debut on Wednesday night, coming on as a late substitute for Rasmus Hojlund in a Premier League 2024 fixture against Sheffield United. Manchester United on Wednesday got back to winning ways beating Sheffield United 4-2 in a Premier League clash however the night will be remembered for Ethan Wheatley coming on as a substitute in the 89th minute of the game, becoming 250th Manchester United Academy graduate to represent the club on the bigger stage.  Fresh from his heroics on Tuesday night, where he secured a brace in United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City to claim the Under 18s Premier League Cup, Stockport-born youngster Ethan Wheatley shone on the field. The young striker had a hat-trick of goals in a recent game where Manchester United’s under-18 team won 9-1 against Liverpool. Erik Ten Hag was full of praises while speaking about Wheatley.  “Credits to the academy, but you also see the club is growing. It’s clear, we are improving, there are players coming up to the first team. We are very pleased the 250th academy player made his debut tonight” Ten Hag said. IPL 2024 : 3 reasons why SRH can end RCB’s Playoff Hopes

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will next see the Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the most destructive batting lineup of the tournament in the form of Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. Sunrisers Hyderabad is currently in third place, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the wooden spooners, with a mere one win from eight matches. The game against SRH is likely to serve as a last opportunity for RCB to qualify for the playoffs. It’s going to be curtains to their IPL 2024 campaign. However, in front of RCB is the mighty batting lineup of SRH who only knows to play the game one way – destruction personified.  Let’s tell you three reasons why RCB’s campaign can come to an end against SRH. 1. Fiery SRH top-orderThe Sunrisers’ top batters have been playing really well lately, and they’re not going easy on the bowlers at all. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma are hitting the ball hard and making it really tough for the bowlers to stop them. The bowlers from the opposing team, RCB, are having a tough time too. It seems like they’re going to struggle against the strong hitting of Head and Abhishek. 2. Astute LeadershipPat Cummins knows the exact way to cook a perfect Hyderabadi Biryani. In the IPL 2024, he’s been leading his team exceptionally well. He’s been delivering on his promises, which sets him apart from other captains. However, RCB’s leadership hasn’t been as good this season. It’s not fair to only blame the captain when the whole team isn’t performing at its best. 3. Home AdvantageSunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) continues a formidable home ground advantage in the IPL 2024, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Familiarity with the pitch conditions and the comfort of playing in familiar surroundings further amplifies their prowess, often proving to be a daunting challenge for visiting teams. SRH’s home ground stands not only as a fortress but also as a sanctuary where their unity with their supporters becomes a potent force, propelling them towards victory in their quest for IPL glory. The SRH are doing well in the tournament, sitting comfortably at the third spot with 10 points from seven matches. On the other hand, RCB, who is eager to win, knows that as the tournament goes on, their bowling strength will be put to the test, especially against SRH. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

Premier League 2024 : Havertz stars with his celebration as Arsenal outclassed Chelsea

Arsenal’s Kai Havertz stole the spotlight in the Premier League season 2024 with his trademark celebration after scoring against his former team, Chelsea. The German midfielder has been in sensational form for the Gunners, contributing two goals in their victory over the Blues in a Premier League game on Tuesday night, which propelled Arsenal three points clear at the top of the league table. Havertz’s first goal came just five minutes after receiving an exquisite pass from Martin Odegaard. Showing impressive skill, he evaded Marc Cucurella’s challenge and expertly struck the ball with his left foot into the net, prompting a jubilant celebration where he shook his hands by his ears in front of the Arsenal faithful. In an interview with Arsenal, Havertz revealed the inspiration behind his celebration, citing Neymar and a teammate from the national team. Later in the game, he found the back of the net again, courtesy of a well-timed pass from Bukayo Saka, though this time his celebration was more subdued. Despite facing criticism from fans and pundits during his initial period at Arsenal, Havertz has now established himself as a key player in Mikel Arteta’s lineup. Even former footballer Rio Ferdinand suggested that Arsenal supporters owe Havertz an apology for their early skepticism, acknowledging his current contributions to the team’s success.
