Virat Kohli Joins World Bowling League As Strategic Investor

The proposed World Bowling League (WBL) has received a shot in the arm as superstar cricketer Virat Kohli has come on board as a strategic investor.

Kohli, one of the greatest batter of the modern era, will help amplify the league’s visibility and global appeal. The 36-year-old is the third-most followed sporting personality on Instagram behind football greats Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“The World Bowling League is pleased to announce cricketing icon Virat Kohli as a strategic investor, igniting a bold new chapter to elevate the sport of bowling,” the league organisers said in an official statement.

The WBL, backed by League Sports Co., is a pioneering initiative featuring mixed-gender teams. The franchises details and the full schedule of the inaugural edition of the league is awaited. Earlier, Mookie Betts, an American baseball player who plays Major League Baseball for Los Angeles Dodgers, purchased the league’s first confirmed team.

Kohli shared his excitement on donning the cap of being the league’s strategic investor.

“I started bowling when I was 11 years old, spinning the ball by 12. It is evident how popular the sport is, while being under-appreciated as a business proposition. I’m thrilled to join the WBL as an investor and partner.” Kohli said in a statement.

Kohli is known for investing in sports businesses. He owns a team in the E1 World Championship powerboat racing series and holds a stake in Indian Super League football club FC Goa.

Adi K. Mishra, the founder and CEO of League Sports Co., welcomed Kohli’s involvement.

“When I discovered Virat is also a bowler, it was exciting to align on this new-age vision for the sport. Every week, we uncover more about bowling’s global depth and fascinating history—it’s a sleeping giant we’re ready to awaken.” Mishra said.

Kohli is currently busy playing in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Having already retired from T20Is, he announced his retirement from Tests earlier this month. Going forward, he will represent India only in the ODIs.
