2024 T20 World Cup: Fast Bowlers Rule, Spinners Take Backseat at Nassau County Cricket Stadium

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 at Nassau County saw bowlers excel despite pitch concerns and ticket issues.

In a low-scoring game against the USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, the Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma used only three overs of spin, all from Axar Patel. India’s pace bowlers were more effective on the New York surface, with Axar and Ravindra Jadeja bowling just nine overs of spin across three matches. Despite having four front-line spinners, including Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, the team relied heavily on seam bowlers like Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh. Arshdeep shone with career-best figures of 4/9, aided by a stunning catch from Mohammed Siraj. As the games at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium are done, let’s dissect how well or not so well were the conditions at the venue during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.  How did the bowlers perform? At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, bowlers have dominated, especially the pace bowlers. India’s seamers like Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj have performed exceptionally well, with Arshdeep achieving career-best figures of 4/9. South Africa’s Anrich Nortje set the record for the best bowling figures on this ground with an impressive 4/7 in 4 overs against Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for just 77 runs. Spin bowlers have been less effective, with India’s spinners like Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja bowling just a few overs. Other teams have also relied more on their pace bowlers due to the low-scoring nature of the pitch. How did the batters perform?Batters have found it challenging to score high on this ground due to the effective pace bowling. However, South Africa’s David Miller holds the record for most runs scored at this venue, amassing 94 runs in his 3 innings with an impressive batting average of 94 and a strike rate of 98.94. India managed to win their matches with solid but not spectacular batting performances, while other teams like the USA struggled to post competitive totals. Key batters, such as Nitish Kumar from the USA, showed some resistance but were often dismissed before making significant contributions. Overall, the pitch at Nassau County has been tough for batters, making it a bowlers’ paradise during the tournament. Drop-In Pitches: A Big No.The drop-in pitches at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup have faced criticism for their poor quality. These pitches have shown uneven bounce and cracks, making them unsafe for players, as seen when India’s captain Rohit Sharma was hit by an unexpectedly bouncing ball in the match against Ireland.  The main issue seems to be the late installation and inadequate preparation of the pitches. Drop-in pitches need to be installed well in advance and undergo various rolling techniques to achieve the proper density and consistency required for high-quality cricket. However, these pitches were only installed in May, giving them insufficient time to mature. Despite being transported from Australia and prepared by an experienced curator, the late installation and lack of proper preparation have resulted in pitches that are not suitable for a major tournament like the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup or rather any ICC tournament. Expensive Tickets The attendance for India’s match against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium was lower than expected, despite a sizeable Indian community in New York and nearby New Jersey. There were around 20,000 fans, but the atmosphere was subdued. The main reasons seem to be poor marketing efforts and expensive ticket prices. The grand stands were filled, but the premium North and South stands, priced at around $1,000, had many empty seats, which didn’t look good on the broadcast. Fans who attended complained about mediocre arrangements and poor facilities, especially considering the high ticket prices.  Ticket prices at Nassau during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 were notably high. For the India-Ireland match, premium tickets such as the Diamond Club were priced at $7,500, Corner Clubs at $950, and Premium Club Lounge seats at $900. For the India-Pakistan match, the Diamond Club tickets at $10,000, Corner Clubs at $2,750, and Premium Club Lounge seats at $2,500. This steep pricing has made it challenging to fill these premium seats, contributing to the lower turnout. For India’s final game in New York against the USA, ticket prices were back to those of the Ireland match. Check out the cheapest and the costliest ticket at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium for the India vs Pakistan clash. Substandard Services OfferedDuring the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County International Cricket Ground, there have been complaints about poor quality services. Fans have criticized the arrangements and facilities, saying they were not up to standard for such a major event. For example, during matches, fans reported issues like long queues at food and beverage stalls, insufficient seating distribution facilities, and inadequate parking arrangements.  Some fans also mentioned problems with viewing angles and overall stadium maintenance, which affected their experience negatively.  These shortcomings have led to disappointment among attendees, highlighting the need for better organization and improved services at future events held at the venue. As India heads to Florida to face Canada and then to the spin-friendly Caribbean for the second round, the bowling strategy is expected to change. The dominance of seamers at Nassau County might give way to a more spin-focused attack. All-rounder Hardik Pandya and medium-pacer Shivam Dube played significant roles in New York, but the team will likely include more spinners for the upcoming matches. Arshdeep’s excellent performance might keep him in the team, though he or Mohammed Siraj could be replaced by an additional spinner in the Caribbean. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

USA vs IND: What is Stop Clock Penalty in Cricket?

Everything you need to know about the Stop Clock Penalty

The USA vs India game at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw a rule being enforced during the game that kept many fans interested. The stop clock penalty is making rounds on social media. USA vs India – the incidentDuring a critical phase of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 group game between the USA and India, the Stop Clock Penalty was enforced. At the start of the 16th over of India’s innings, India needed 35 runs to win on a tough batting pitch. However, due to the USA’s slow over rate, they were penalized, reducing India’s target to 30 runs off 30 balls. This penalty came at a crucial moment, giving India an advantage and easing their chase. Ultimately, India won the match by seven wickets with ten balls to spare. Reaction and ImpactThe USA’s stand-in captain, Aaron Jones, was briefed by the umpires regarding the penalty. Following their defeat, USA found themselves needing a win or a no-result in their final match against Ireland to qualify for the Super Eight. A loss would likely mean their progression depended on net run rate. USA coach Stuart Law acknowledged that his team had been warned about the over rate in previous matches and recognized the need for improvement. He stated that while the penalty was significant, it did not affect the overall outcome of the game. Law emphasized the importance of adapting to new rules and maintaining the pace of play. The introduction of the Stop Clock Penalty indicates the ICC’s commitment to fasten up the game and finish it in time. While the penalty had a notable impact on the USA vs India game, it would be considered as a reminder to all teams to adhere to the new pace-of-play regulations. The rule aims to keep the game moving swiftly, maintaining momentum and pressure both at the same time. The Stop Clock Penalty in cricket is a regulation introduced to enforce a faster pace of play in T20 Internationals (T20Is) and One Day Internationals (ODIs). This rule ensures that the fielding side must be ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over concluding. If a team fails to meet this requirement three times in an innings, they incur a five-run penalty. The Regulation DetailsThe Stop Clock Penalty was officially introduced as a permanent feature in men’s limited-overs cricket from June 1, 2024. The regulation states: “The clock will be used to regulate the amount of time taken between overs. If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a five-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings.”  ReceptionThe Stop Clock Penalty rule had a mixed reception. Former India spin bowler, Harbhajan Singh was miffed with the ICC for complicating things. “I don’t understand why five runs were awarded to Team India. This went in their favor today, but it could go against them in a future game. The ICC is introducing new rules every now and then, and no one is even aware of them. There are other ways to control the flow of the game. Earlier, the over rate was calculated on the basis of the allotted time for one innings but now you have kept the time limit for one over. I don’t get it,” Harbhajan Singh said. This rule was ratified after a trial period showed positive results in terms of improving over rates. During the trial, matches saw a reduction in overall duration by around 20 minutes per ODI. No team exceeded the one-minute limit between overs three times in an innings during the trial, making the USA the first team to be penalized under the new rule. USA vs India: How Babar Azam’s Pakistan Can Still Qualify for Super 8s?

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan's tough path hinges on USA's performance against India and Ireland.

The next encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the USA will take on India in New York. While this match is important for both teams, it holds special significance for the Pakistan Cricket fans. Babar Azam and his men will be hoping that the USA can pull off a surprise victory against India, which would greatly help Pakistan’s chances in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan’s Situation in the T20 World CupPakistan has faced a tough time in the tournament so far. They have lost two matches and are now in a difficult position. However, they are not out of the competition yet. Their future in the tournament depends on the performances of India and the USA. The 2024 T20 World Cup has been full of surprises, with top teams losing to underdogs. Pakistan, who were finalists in the 2022 World Cup, have struggled this time. Their batting, bowling, and fielding have not been up to the mark, putting them on the brink of elimination. A Ray of Hope for Pakistan Despite their struggles, Pakistan still has a chance to make it to the Super 8s if certain things go their way. After losing to both the USA and India, Pakistan won against Canada, improving their net run rate to 0.191.  For Pakistan to advance, they must:1. Beat Ireland Pakistan needs to win their match against Ireland.2. USA to Lose Two Matches The USA needs to lose their two remaining matches against India on June 12 and Ireland on June 14. Even if the USA loses by a total of ten runs (assuming a score of 140 by the team batting first), any win for Pakistan will be enough as long as they score at least 112 when batting first. Weather ConcernsPakistan also has to worry about the weather for their match against Ireland at Lauderhill. A previous game at this venue between Sri Lanka and Nepal was washed out due to rain. If the USA gains even one more point and Pakistan loses a point due to a washout, Pakistan will be out of the World Cup. For Pakistani fans, the upcoming matches are critical. They will be hoping for favorable results and clear skies to keep their World Cup hopes alive.  You may also likeUSA vs. India: Weather, Playing XI, Injuries, and Game Changers The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Can the USA upset Rohit & Co.? When Minnows Shock Team India in World Cups

Will USA upset Inda?

The USA men’s cricket team is close to advancing to the second round (Super 8s) of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which would be a big surprise. This comes after they had a shock win against Pakistan a couple of days ago and some favorable results over the weekend. Team U.S.A. is currently second in Group A with four points from two wins in two games, the same as India, who are at the top because of a better run rate. The top two teams from each group will move on to the Super 8s. Also Read: USA – National Cricket Team or Daily Wage Workers? To advance, the USA must either pull off another huge upset by beating India in New York on Wednesday or the struggling Irish team on Friday in Lauderhill, Florida. If they win one of these games, they will earn six points and move to the next round. The USA game would be a never-expected challenge for Rohit Sharma and his men in blue. With the discipline and the firepower USA has shown during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 so far, it would be fair to say that they would be eyeing to beat India and be the first team from group A to enter into the Super 8s.  It would be a big surprise for everyone in cricket if a team like the USA beats India, one of the tournament favorites, in their upcoming match. India has had some unexpected losses in past ICC tournaments and they don’t want it to happen again. Let’s look at the times when India was previously upset by lower-ranked teams in ICC tournaments. Bangladesh vs India – 2007 World Cup  Bangladesh caused the first upset of the tournament by thoroughly outplaying India in all areas. India’s batsmen struggled against the new ball and Bangladesh’s left-arm spinners, collapsing for just 191 runs. When Bangladesh chased the target, three young players – Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim – scored fifties on their World Cup debut to lead Bangladesh to a splendid victory. India’s experienced batsmen were outperformed by the young Bangladeshi players. In that match, Tamim Iqbal scored for Bangladesh with 51 runs, Shakib Al Hasan made a brilliant 53, and Mushfiqur Rahim added 56 not out. 1999 India lost to Zimbabwe  In the 1999 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Zimbabwe played against India and secured a narrow victory. Zimbabwe batted first and scored 252 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 50 overs. Andy Flower was the top scorer for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 68 runs off 85 balls. Other contributions came from Grant Flower, who scored 45 runs off 89 balls. For India, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad were the standout bowlers, each taking 2 wickets with Srinath conceding 35 runs in his 10 overs and Prasad giving away 37 runs in his 10 overs. India, chasing a target of 253, managed to score 249 runs before being bowled out in 45 overs, falling short by just 3 runs. Sadagoppan Ramesh was the top scorer for India with 55 runs off 77 balls, and Ajay Jadeja contributed 43 runs off 76 balls. For Zimbabwe, Heath Streak and Henry Olonga were the key bowlers. Streak took 3 wickets for 36 runs in his 9 overs, and Olonga took 3 wickets for just 22 runs in his 4 overs, playing a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s victory. Sri Lanka beat India in 1979 World Cup Another major upset for India by a minnow team came when Sri Lanka played against India in the Prudential World Cup 1979. Sri Lanka batted first and scored 238 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 60 overs. Sunil Wettimuny was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 67 runs off 120 balls, and Duleep Mendis contributed a quick 64 runs off 57 balls. For India, Mohinder Amarnath was the most successful bowler, taking 3 wickets for 40 runs in his 12 overs, while Kapil Dev took 1 wicket for 53 runs in his 12 overs. In reply, India struggled and were bowled out for 191 runs in 54.1 overs. Dilip Vengsarkar was the top scorer for India with 36 runs off 57 balls, and Anshuman Gaekwad scored 33 runs off 52 balls. For Sri Lanka, Somachandra De Silva was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 29 runs in his 11 overs. Tony Opatha also bowled effectively, taking 3 wickets for 31 runs in his 10.1 overs, helping Sri Lanka secure a memorable victory over India. If the USA manages to upset India in their upcoming match, it would send shockwaves through the cricketing world, marking one of the most significant upsets in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history. T20 World Cup 2024: After India’s win over Pakistan, Decoding Qualification Scenario in Group A

What needs to be done by the Group A teams to make it to the Super 8 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 post India's win against Pakistan.

In a thrilling contest at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 held at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, the Indian Cricket Team triumphed over their arch-rivals Pakistan by 6 runs. Defending a modest total of 119, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh delivered stellar performances that dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup.  Despite having a relatively low score to defend, India’s bowlers rose to the occasion, with Bumrah and Arshdeep leading the charge, ultimately securing a narrow yet memorable victory for India. The recent win against Pakistan has taken the Indian Cricket Team to the top of the rankings on Group A table.  POINTS TABLE – GROUP A POSITION TEAM WON LOST NRR POINTS 1 India 2 0 1.455 4 2 USA 2 0 0.626 4 3 Canada 1 1 -0.274 2 4 Pakistan 0 2 -0.150 0 5 Ireland 0 2 -1.712 0 Here are team qualification scenarios for Super 8 1. IndiaCurrent Position: 1stPoints: 4 (2 matches, 2 wins)NRR: 1.455Remaining Matches: vs USA and vs CanadaIndia holds the upper hand in the race for the Super Eights as they sit on top of the Group A points table. With a comparatively better Net Run Rate than USA, team India will have to ensure that they win over the USA and then they will almost ensure their qualification. India’s next match is against USA on June 12 and their final group-stage match will be against Canada on June 15. If India beats USA, then they will likely qualify as the group winners. 2. USA Current Position: 2ndPoints: 4 (2 matches, 2 wins)NRR: 0.626Remaining Matches: vs India and vs IrelandUSA already have two wins in their kitty while all three of Pakistan, Ireland and Canada have lost their respective opening games. If USA beat India, which won’t be easy given the Men in Blue have already played a game in New York and the co-hosts will have to adapt to the surface, which has been challenging so far, coming from Dallas, where the contest between bat and ball was much better — USA can even top the group, but it won’t matter given the seedings for Super 8 have already been decided. 3. CanadaCurrent Position: 3rdPoints: 2 (2 matches, 1 win, 1 loss)NRR: -0.274Remaining Matches: vs Pakistan, vs IndiaCurrently placed 3rd, if Canada wins both of their remaining matches, they will finish with 6 points and are likely to qualify for the next stage. If they win one match and lose the other, they will have 4 points, and their chances of qualifying will depend on their Net Run Rate (NRR) compared to other teams with 4 points. If Canada loses both matches, they will end up with 2 points and will not qualify for the next stage. 4. PakistanCurrent Position: 4thPoints: 0 (2 matches, 2 losses)NRR: -0.150Remaining Matches: vs Canada and vs IrelandWith the defeat, Pakistan’s chance of making it to the Super Eights is in grave danger. Babar Azam and his team will have to win both of their matches and depend on other results to qualify for the Super 8 stage in the T20 World Cup 2024.  In Pakistan’s case, USA is the biggest block. If the United States wins one of their last two matches, Pakistan will be eliminated. Hence Pakistan will have to hope that USA loses their last two matches against India and Ireland. If this happens and Pakistan wins their last two against Canada and Ireland, Babar Azam and his team may qualify for the next stages. 5. If Ireland loses both matches, they will end up with 0 points and will not qualify for the next stage India and the USA are currently leading the race for the top two spots in Group A of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. India, sitting at the top of the table with 4 points from 2 wins, are well-positioned to qualify, especially if they win their upcoming match against the USA. The USA, also with 4 points, have surprised many with their strong performance, and their qualification for the Super Eights would be a massive achievement, given their less-established presence in the cricketing fraternity..  If the USA manages to beat India or Ireland in their remaining matches, it would secure their spot in the next stage, marking a big upset in the tournament. This potential qualification underscores the rapid development and growing competitiveness of cricket in the USA, adding an exciting twist to the race for the top positions in Group A. Rizwan’s Misjudged Shot Proves Costly As Bumrah’s Magic Delivery Turns the Tide

Batters' misjudged shots can dramatically alter cricket matches, as seen with Rizwan, Gatting, Ramprakash, and Kapil Dev.

Chasing a seemingly modest target of 120, Pakistan was comfortably placed at 80-3 after 14 overs. Mohammad Rizwan, their top-scorer, was steady at the crease with 31 runs from 43 balls. However, on the first ball of the 15th over, Jasprit Bumrah produced a magical delivery that caught Rizwan off guard. Attempting to play a defensive shot, Rizwan misjudged the line and length, resulting in the ball cannoning into the stumps and shattering his defenses. Rizwan’s dismissal shifted the momentum in India’s favor, as the crucial wicket on the first ball of the 15th over left Pakistan reeling. Despite high expectations from Iftikhar, the 33-year-old right-handed batter struggled to finish the match, managing only five runs from nine balls before getting out. Rizwan’s misjudged shot proved to be the turning point, leading to Pakistan’s eventual downfall in the match. There have been a couple of cases of batters falling into the trap playing a false shot. These false shots have cost their teams the game as well. Let’s take a look at who played a false shot in the past and what was its impact. Mike Gatting in 1987In the most closely fought World Cup final to date, Australia, led by Allan Border, clinched the 1987 World Cup by defeating archrivals England by 7 runs. England, on the brink of victory, witnessed a dramatic turn of events when captain Mike Gatting played a high-risk reverse sweep against the left-arm spin of his counterpart, Allan Border. Gatting’s risky shot led to his dismissal, triggering a collapse from a position of strength and handing an unexpected victory to the Australians. Mark Ramprakash in 2001 In the 2001 Trent Bridge Test, England, trailing by five runs, were reeling at 126 for 4, having lost key wickets of Mike Atherton and Alec Stewart. Mark Ramprakash, who had patiently scored 26 runs in an hour and a half, faced relentless sledging from Shane Warne. Warne’s taunts, urging Ramprakash to step out and attack, culminated in a moment of red mist. With just nine overs left for stumps, Ramprakash charged down the track, only to be deceived by Warne’s classic leg break, leading to an easy stumping for Adam Gilchrist. Reflecting on the incident, Ramprakash later remarked, “Throughout my Test career I’ve been accused of not playing my shots… and I will be looking to take the attacking option when I can – even if that means going down the pitch to Shane Warne.” Kapil Dev in 1984 In a controversial moment in Indian cricket history, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev was dropped from the team for the Kolkata Test against England in 1984. Under Sunil Gavaskar’s leadership, India won the game by 8 wickets. At the time, it was reported that Kapil’s omission was due to his poor performances, allegedly proposed by Gavaskar. However, in a recent interaction, Gavaskar dispelled this myth, clarifying, “As far as Kapil Dev is concerned, this has been something a myth that has been spread for a long, long time. I did not propose dropping Kapil Dev. I was part of the selection committee as the Indian captain and as the Indian captain, I can join the selection committee I do not have a voting right. I’m just co-opted to the selection committee. The proposed action to drop Kapil was proposed by somebody else, another selector.” These incidents underscore the fine line between brilliance and blunder in cricket, where a single misjudged shot can alter the course of a match and, sometimes, a player’s career. Is this a T20 World Cup Full of Upsets?

Rashid Khan

The 2024 T20 World Cup has not even completed a week, but there have been some upsets already. If the USA’s win over Pakistan in Dallas, was the trigger, fans had quite a few shockers coming their way. On Friday, the cricket fraternity witnessed not one, but two upsets. In the first match played in Guyana, Afghanistan registered an annihilation over New Zealand by 84 runs. For many fans, this wasn’t an upset, but a clinical performance by Afghanistan against the Kiwis. In the second match, it was Bangladesh’s turn to stun Sri Lanka. Also Read: USA Cricket Team or Daily Wage Workers? In a closely fought contest in Dallas, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by 2 wickets to script the second upset of the day in the ongoing T20 World Cup. With three results going against strong teams, and the minnows making a strong statement, the tournament is already wide open. Is the 2024 T20 World Cup, the most competitive edition? Gone are the days, when there used to be favorites for a T20 World Cup. Yes, the likes of India, Australia, and England are still the leaders of the pack, but the gulf is decreasing pretty quickly between the rest of the sides. Take Afghanistan for example. Their performance over New Zealand cannot be considered a fluke anymore. They have stunned top teams in the past, especially in T20 format. Most of their players participate in the IPL, which gives them the ideal preparation to perform well under pressure. The heroes for Afghanistan against New Zealand – Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, and Fazalhaq Farroqi have all proved their mettle in the IPL, and all the major T20 competitive leagues. Afghanistan’s win over New Zealand is a top-notch one. However, they have defeated the likes of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and even the West Indies in the past. During the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and registered a total of four wins from 9 matches. Can Bangladesh make a mark after upsetting Sri Lanka? Despite Bangladesh’s recent progress in 50-over-format, their performance in T20 cricket has been highly inconsistent. Thanks to Mustafizur Rahman, Rishad Hossain, and useful knocks from Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy, Bangladesh registered a major upset in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka, now with two losses from as many games is on the brink of elimination from the World Cup. Bangladesh’s win in Dallas should give them confidence, before their big game against South Africa. After a week of T20 World Cup action, no team can claim themselves to be unbeatable, especially in this format. While the USA paved the way, the likes of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and a few others can emerge as the giant slayers come week 2. This is the T20 World Cup, where upsets are no longer an upset, for the fans at least, if not for the teams at the receiving end. Also Read: USA’s win over Pakistan, bad news for the ICC?
