‘Indian tennis needed this,’ states Rohan Bopanna after becoming oldest No.1 men’s doubles player in history

The Australian Open 2024 has unfolded as a spectacular tournament, casting a spotlight on the resilience and skill of Indian tennis veteran Rohan Bopanna. At the age of 43, Bopanna, in an unprecedented achievement, has steered his way into the semi-finals alongside partner Matthew Ebden, marking a pivotal moment in his illustrious career.

The quarter-final clash against the Argentinian duo Maximo Gonzalez & Andres Molteni not only secured their spot in the semis but also paved the way for Bopanna to ascend to the summit of the ATP men’s doubles rankings, making him the oldest player to claim the coveted World No. 1 title post the conclusion of the tournament.

In a heartfelt interview on Sony Sports Network’s Extraaa Serve, Bopanna expressed his elation, stating, “It feels absolutely amazing and incredible to be where I am today, especially after 20 years of being in the sport and constantly striving for excellence. Indian tennis needed this. With all the support I have received in the last two decades, this is something I have to give back to the entire nation.”

Reflecting on the impact of his achievement, Bopanna hopes to inspire the aspiring talents back in India. “Watching sports, you always have idols while growing up and someone who inspires you. I hope me reaching the No. 1 position inspires someone back home,” he added.

This historic moment comes following the India No. 1 singles star Sumit Nagal’s commendable run, reaching the second round and breaking a 34-year dry spell for India in defeating a seeded player in the singles main draw.

I think each and every fan deserves the credit. Indian tennis deserves a lot more credit. It’s a sport with a lot of talented youngsters who really need the support to make it to the big stage,” emphasized Bopanna, acknowledging the collective effort that has contributed to the success of Indian tennis.

As Bopanna and Ebden gear up to face Zhang Zhizhen and Tomas Machac in the Australian Open 2024 semi-final at the Rod Laver Arena on January 25, 2024, the nation awaits with bated breath. The match will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network, offering fans the opportunity to witness this historic moment in Indian tennis. With Bopanna’s remarkable journey and Nagal’s inspiring feat, Indian tennis enthusiasts have more than one reason to celebrate and cherish the ongoing tournament.
