T20 World Cup 2024: Bat 1st or Bowl 1st – What should the Teams opt for?

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 features strategic decisions based on varying success rates for batting first.

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is here, taking place in the Caribbean and the USA. This is the third tournament in four years and it’s the first time the USA is hosting an ICC event. This introduces some new challenges for the teams given that the conditions out there would be completely alien. FRESH DYNAMICS IN T20sT20 leagues often test new ideas, but these innovations are showcased on a larger scale during the World Cup. In 2023, there was a significant increase in scoring rates across major T20 leagues like the IPL, PSL, and BBL, reaching an all-time high of 8.61. This trend has continued into 2024. Notably, the IPL, PSL, CPL, and T20 Blast all recorded their highest scoring rates ever in 2023. The IPL improved even more in 2024, reaching a scoring rate of 9.56, the highest in any T20 tournament. Batters like Travis Head have been destroying the bowling lineups like a child’s play. Especially the ones wearing his favorite blue jersey. Since the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, matches between the full time member nations have had a scoring rate of 8.59, the highest between World Cups. This sets the stage for the upcoming World Cup. With T20 cricket soo much evolved over the last couple of months and with challenging playing conditions in the Caribbean, teams need to make smart decisions, starting right at the toss. Should they bat first or bowl first? Playing Conditions During CPLIn the CPL, over the last three seasons, teams batting first won 48 out of 96 games. In day games, teams batting first won 61% of the time, while in night games, teams chasing won three out of five times. The average first-innings score in Caribbean T20s is 170 in day games and 169 in night games. Some venues favor batting first in day games, like Bridgetown, Tarouba, and Providence. At night, teams chasing win more often. Gros Islet is different, with teams setting targets doing better in night games, and an even split in day games. In Dallas, during the 2023 MLC, teams batting first won eight out of 12 games, including all three day games. In Lauderhill, teams batting first won four out of six games. Since April 2021, in 36 completed T20s at these venues, teams batting first have won 26. In 46 completed night games, teams chasing have a 23-22 win-loss record. Here’s the record for teams batting first in Day-Night Games on several venues across the West Indies and the USA.  W-L Record for Teams Batting First Since April 2021 VENUE MATCHES WON LOST NR AVG 1st INNINGS TOTAL Providence 11 6 3 2 169 Tarouba 8 6 2 0 180 Bridgetown 8 6 1 1 171 Gros Islet 5 2 2 1 166 Florida 5 3 2 0 182 Dallas 3 3 0 0 173 Here’s the record for teams batting first in Night Games on several venues across the West Indies and the USA.  W-L Record for Teams Batting First Since April 2021 VENUE MATCHES WON LOST NR AVG 1st INNINGS TOTAL Providence 15 6 9 0 175 Tarouba 4 1 3 0 146 Bridgetown 5 2 3 0 188 Gros Islet 12 7 4 1 171 Florida 1 1 0 0 150 Dallas 9 5 4 0 166 Considering the historical data from the past few years, teams need to carefully strategize their decision to bat or bowl first in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.  WHAT SHOULD TEAMS OPT FOR?In day games, there is a clear advantage to batting first, particularly at venues like Bridgetown, Tarouba, and Providence, where teams batting first have a win percentage exceeding 66%. Conversely, in night games, chasing teams tend to perform better, with a balanced record in venues like Gros Islet and a notable advantage for chasing teams in Tarouba and Bridgetown. Dallas also shows a strong trend favoring teams batting first, regardless of the time of day.  Thus, captains should consider batting first in day games to leverage the higher success rates, while opting to chase in night games could be a smarter approach to exploit the conditions and historical patterns. By making these informed decisions, teams can enhance their chances of emerging victorious in this highly competitive tournament. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

2024 T20 World Cup: How Much ‘Bonus’ Awaits Team India’s Stars Post 2024 T20 World Cup Win?

The Indian Cricket Team has always been one of the strongest teams in the world of cricket. When Team India wins a major tournament like the ICC T20 World Cup, the players not only gain immense pride and glory but also receive substantial bonuses and rewards. Let’s explore how much bonus awaits Team India’s stars after their win in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and compare it with historical data, including the net worth of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2011 and 2024. Bonuses and Rewards: An Overview Winning an ICC tournament is a monumental achievement in cricket. Players often receive bonuses from their national cricket boards, and in India’s case, the BCCI is known for being particularly generous. These bonuses are in addition to the prize money awarded by the ICC itself. BONUSES FOR THE ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP After winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, each member of the Indian cricket team is expected to receive a significant bonus. While the exact amount has not been officially confirmed yet, we can make an educated guess based on previous trends and statements from BCCI officials. Also Read: Net Worth of Indian Cricketers ‘Special 15’ for the T20 World Cup 1. Team Bonuses Historically, team bonuses have been quite substantial. For instance, after India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, each player received approximately INR 80 lakhs (about USD 100,000 at the time). Given inflation and the increased revenues in cricket, players could expect bonuses in the range of INR 1-2 crore (approximately USD 120,000-240,000) each for the 2024 victory. 2. Individual Awards: Players who perform exceptionally well often receive additional bonuses. For example, the top run-scorer or wicket-taker might receive extra financial rewards. These could range from INR 50 lakhs to INR 1 crore (about USD 60,000-120,000). 3. State and Corporate Rewards: Various state governments and corporations also reward players. These can include cash prizes, luxury cars, and even real estate. Such rewards could total up to several crores of rupees. BCCI’s NET WORTH: 2011 vs 2024The BCCI is one of the richest cricket boards in the world. Its financial status has a significant impact on the bonuses it can award. NET WORTH IN 2011In 2011, the BCCI’s net worth was estimated to be around USD 1.5 billion. This was a time of great financial stability and growth for Indian cricket, bolstered by the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and India’s win in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. This financial health allowed BCCI to reward the players generously. After the 2011 World Cup victory, the BCCI awarded each player INR 1 crore (approximately USD 225,000 at that time). NET WORTH 2024By 2024, the BCCI’s net worth has skyrocketed to an estimated USD 3 billion. This growth can be attributed to several factors:– Increased Revenue from IPL: The IPL has continued to grow exponentially, attracting massive sponsorships and broadcasting deals.– International Series and Tournaments: Regular international cricket series and the hosting of major tournaments have further boosted revenues.– Commercial Partnerships: Lucrative deals with sponsors and partners have contributed significantly. This enhanced financial position allows the BCCI to offer even more substantial bonuses to players. LAST ICC TOURNAMENT BONUSESThe last ICC tournament after which Team India players received significant bonuses was the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. After winning this tournament, the BCCI announced a reward of INR 1 crore (about USD 150,000 at that time) for each player. This victory further cemented the trend of rewarding players generously for their performances on the global stage. CONCLUSIONThe victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup is set to bring a windfall for Team India’s players. With the BCCI’s current strong financial status, thanks to the exponential growth in revenues from the IPL and other sources, the bonuses for the players are expected to be very generous. Each player might receive bonuses in the range of INR 1-2 crore, in addition to other rewards from states and private entities. Winning an ICC tournament not only brings glory and pride but also significant financial rewards. The BCCI, being one of the wealthiest cricket boards, ensures that the players are well compensated for their hard work and dedication. This practice of rewarding players has been consistent, reflecting the board’s appreciation of the players’ efforts and their contribution to Indian cricket’s success on the global stage. DAREN SAMMY NATIONAL CRICKET STADIUM, ST LUCIAThe Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia, was officially named after Daren Sammy in 2016. This renaming occurred after Sammy led the West Indies cricket team to their second T20 World Cup title. The stadium is located on the outskirts of Rodney Bay, with the scenic Beausejour Hills providing a beautiful backdrop.  The stadium hosted its first international match, an ODI between the West Indies and New Zealand, in June 2002. It has an oval-shaped playing surface, with longer boundaries extending straight from the wicket and shorter dimensions on the sides. Daren Sammy holds the unique honor of having the stadium named after him. Additionally, Johnson Charles, another cricketer from Saint Lucia who achieved success in the T20 World Cup, has a stand named after him at the venue. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean was not up to the mark with regard to the quality of the pitches produced. The players and the spectators were very unhappy with the overall tournament preparations. The grounds, the change rooms, the seating arrangements and the hospitality faced a lot of backlash due to poor quality services. However, after 17 years, the West Indies Cricket Board is all set to welcome the world to their home once again. This time with upgraded facilities and top-notch services, the cricketing arenas are set to provide a memorable experience for players and fans alike.  The West Indies Cricket Board is on a mission to redeem themselves as quality hosts, cricket enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing thrilling games amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the Caribbean. T20 World Cup 2024: Horror Show in 2010, Glory in 2024 For Team India?

India's Road To Redemption 2010-2024

Team India is looking to end 17-year-drought of winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The tournament is held in the West Indies and the US. The last time when India played an ICC event in 2010, it was a forgettable campaign. For the Indian Cricket Team, 2024 presents an opportunity to set the record straight. 2010 T20 World Cup in the West Indies – A Horror Show by the BluesThe ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2010 was held in the West Indies. Expectations were high for the Indian Cricket Team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni. However, what unfolded was nothing short of a nightmare. India’s performance in the tournament was disappointing, to say the least. Group Stage WoesIndia was placed in Group C alongside South Africa and Afghanistan. They managed to win their opening match against Afghanistan but faced a tough challenge against South Africa. Despite a valiant effort, India lost to South Africa, setting up a challenging path to the Super Eight stage. Super Eight DisappointmentIn the Super Eight stage, India was grouped with Australia, West Indies, and Sri Lanka. The matches against these teams proved to be disastrous. India lost all three games, failing to qualify for the semi-finals. Their batting line-up, which included stars like Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, and Yuvraj Singh, faltered under pressure. The bowling attack, spearheaded by Zaheer Khan, couldn’t contain the opposition’s batsmen. Criticism and ReflectionThe 2010 T20 World Cup campaign was a wake-up call for Indian cricket. Critics and fans were vocal about the team’s poor performance. Questions were raised about the players’ form, team selection, and overall strategy. The horror show in the West Indies left a scar on Indian cricket, but it also sparked a period of introspection and rebuilding. The Road to Redemption – Post 2010After the debacle in 2010, Indian cricket embarked on a journey of redemption. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team management focused on building a strong and balanced squad. The Indian Premier League (IPL) played a crucial role in identifying and nurturing young talent. Players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah emerged as key figures in the team’s resurgence. Rise of Young StarsThe rise of young stars has been instrumental in India’s journey to redemption. Players like Shivam Dube and Rishabh Pant add depth and versatility to the squad. Their performances in the IPL and international cricket give the team a fresh edge. Strategic ChangesIndia has been making strategic changes in their approach to T20 cricket. Emphasis is placed on power-hitting, innovative bowling, and sharp fielding. The coaching staff, led by Rahul Dravid has worked tirelessly to instill a winning mentality in the players. The focus is on playing fearless cricket, regardless of the opposition or conditions. Glory in 2024?Fast forward to 2024, and Team India is once again a force to be reckoned with in T20 cricket. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 serves as a perfect stage for the Men In Blue to redeem themselves as the greatest ever T20I side as they take on the world. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.
