INDIA’S JOURNEY IN ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUPS

2007: India had a sensational run in the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup back in 2007. They reached the final under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, showcasing their dominance throughout the tournament. In the final against Pakistan, India emerged victorious, clinching the title and becoming the first-ever T20 World Cup champions.

2009: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 saw India faltering to make a significant impact. Despite being one of the favorites, they couldn’t advance beyond the Super Eight stage. Their campaign ended with a disappointing performance, finishing in 10th place overall.

2010: In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2010, held in the West Indies, India showcased a better performance. They reached the Super Eight stage but failed to progress further. India finished in 8th place in the tournament.

2012: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2012 marked a resurgence for India. Under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, they put up a commendable performance, reaching the Super Eight stage. However, they couldn’t make it to the finals, ending their campaign in 5th place overall.

2014: In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014, held in Bangladesh, India displayed dominance once again. They reached the final stages of the tournament but faced a defeat against Sri Lanka in the finals. Despite the loss, India finished as the runners-up, securing the 2nd position overall.


2016: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016 witnessed another strong performance by India. The tournament is also remembered for Virat Kohli’s game changing run-chase in a do or die clash against Australia in Mohali. India advanced to the semi-finals however faced a loss against the West Indies. India finished in 4th place in the tournament.

2021: In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, held in the United Arab Emirates, India had a challenging campaign. Despite putting up a fighting spirit, they couldn’t progress beyond the Super 12 stage, finishing in 10th place overall.

2022: The most recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022 saw India making a remarkable comeback. Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, they showcased exceptional performance, reaching the finals. However, they faced defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling final match, securing the runners-up position once again.

Overall, India has had a mix of successes and challenges in ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, with notable victories in 2007 and 2014, along with commendable performances in other editions. All eyes would be on the men in blue as they take on the world in the shortest format of the game starting their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on Wednesday, 05th of June, 2024 against Ireland.
