T20 World Cup: Made for India, With Love From The ICC?

What if your office timings clash with the India vs Pakistan fixture on the 9th of June, 2024 at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024? Well you dont need to worry as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a tailormade schedule considering the viewership of the Indian audience watching the tournament. Over the years, the ICC has made many decisions that reflect the significant influence of Indian cricket. This is not surprising, given that India is home to one of the largest and most passionate cricket fan bases in the world. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plays a central role in this scenario, wielding immense power within the ICC due to its financial clout and the massive viewership cricket commands in India. THE DOMINANCE OF BCCI IN ICCThe BCCI is the richest cricket board globally, generating enormous revenue from cricket. This financial power translates into significant influence within the ICC. The BCCI’s dominance is visible in various aspects, including decision-making, tournament hosting, and scheduling. ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024- TAILORED FOR INDIAN VIEWERS?The T20 World Cup is one of the most anticipated cricket events, drawing millions of viewers worldwide. However, a significant portion of this audience comes from India. Recognizing this, the ICC has made several decisions to cater to Indian fans. CONVENIENT MATCH TIMINGS FOR INDIAN VIEWERSOne of the most notable ways the ICC accommodates Indian viewers is through match timings. Many T20 World Cup games are scheduled to start in the evening, Indian Standard Time. This timing ensures that a large number of viewers in India can watch the matches after work or school, maximizing the audience and, consequently, advertising revenue. This approach benefits not only the ICC but also the sponsors and broadcasters, who can reach a vast and engaged audience. HOST NATIONS AND VENUESThe choice of host nations and venues for the T20 World Cup also reflects the ICC’s focus on the Indian market. The tournament has been hosted in countries with large Indian expatriate populations, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These locations ensure a significant local fan presence, creating a lively atmosphere that appeals to television viewers. Moreover, hosting the tournament in countries with favorable time zones for India ensures high viewership ratings. MARKETING AND PROMOTIONThe ICC’s marketing strategies for the T20 World Cup often center around Indian players and themes. Indian cricket stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and MS Dhoni are prominently featured in promotional campaigns. The ICC also collaborates with Indian brands and celebrities to create buzz around the tournament. These efforts are aimed at engaging Indian fans and ensuring their active participation in the event. THE IMPACT OF INDIAN VIEWERSHIPThe focus on Indian viewers has a significant impact on the T20 World Cup and cricket as a whole. This influence extends beyond scheduling and marketing to the very nature of the game. REVENUE GENERATIONThe high viewership from India translates into substantial revenue for the ICC. Advertisers are willing to pay premium rates for commercial slots during matches involving India. This revenue is crucial for funding the development of cricket globally, supporting smaller cricketing nations, and organizing future tournaments. Thus, the financial success of the T20 World Cup is heavily reliant on the Indian audience. GLOBAL POPULARITYThe focus on India also helps in promoting cricket globally. The excitement and passion of Indian fans often attract attention from non-traditional cricketing markets. The spectacle of a T20 World Cup match, filled with enthusiastic Indian supporters, showcases the global appeal of cricket. This can inspire new fans and players in different parts of the world, contributing to the sport’s growth. FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONSThe BCCI’s contributions to the ICC’s revenue are substantial. India’s massive population, coupled with its deep love for cricket, means that any cricket event featuring India attracts huge audiences. Advertisers and sponsors are eager to tap into this market, leading to high revenues for the ICC. For instance, television rights for ICC events, particularly those featuring India, fetch sky-high prices. The Indian Premier League (IPL), a domestic tournament, also plays a role in this financial dynamic, as it demonstrates the commercial potential of cricket in India. INFLUENCE ON DECISIONS?The BCCI’s financial muscle gives it a significant say in the ICC’s decisions. This influence is evident in the scheduling and format of tournaments. For example, the T20 World Cup often has matches scheduled at times convenient for Indian audiences, ensuring maximum viewership. The BCCI’s role in the ICC’s governance structures further solidifies its influence. Key positions within the ICC are often held by individuals closely associated with the BCCI, ensuring that India’s interests are well-represented. CRITICISM AND CHALLENGESHowever, the ICC’s focus on India is not without its critics. Some argue that the emphasis on catering to Indian viewers can lead to the neglect of other cricketing nations. There are concerns about the over-commercialization of the sport and the potential for scheduling conflicts with domestic cricket leagues in other countries. Balancing the interests of all member nations while acknowledging India’s significant contribution remains a challenge for the ICC. The ICC’s relationship with Indian cricket, particularly through the BCCI, is a defining aspect of modern cricket. The T20 World Cup, in many ways, is an example to this relationship, with its scheduling, marketing, and organization reflecting the importance of Indian viewers. While this focus has brought financial success and global popularity to cricket, it also poses challenges that the ICC must navigate. As cricket continues to evolve, the role of India and its passionate fans will undoubtedly remain central to the sport’s future. The Sportz Planet Desk, Atharva Shetye

Do Warm-up Games Count in Cricket? What are the match rules, pitch and playing conditions like?

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 carnival is on the roll with the warm-up games underway. Sixteen warm-up games are scheduled to be played before the group stage games starting on the 1st of June, 2024. The BCCI has shared videos of the Indian Cricket Team practicing hard in the nets. The real test would be in the middle, when the action begins on June 05th. Before that the Blues have a single warm-up game at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Also Read: Team India’s Report Card at T20 World Cup As a cricket fan, one question that’s bound to pop up is do these warm-up games count? What if Jasprit Bumrah takes in a 5-fer, or Rohit Sharma slams a hundred? Will these runs or wickets be added up in their International career or even in their First-Class/T20 career? If you are looking for answers to such never-answered questions before, we have it covered, just for you. What is a Warm-up match? In cricket, warm-up games are just practice games that teams play before a series or tournament to get ready for the main event. The rules for these matches can vary and are usually agreed upon by the teams beforehand. 1. FormatWarm-up games can be T20s, One Day Internationals (ODIs), or multi-day games, depending on the upcoming series or tournament. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up games will be played with 20 overs per side. 2. Number of PlayersTeams can use more than eleven players in warm-up games, allowing all squad members to practice. 3. OversThe number of overs can be decided by agreement between the teams or organizers. Usually in ICC tournament warm-up games the overs are set as per the main pool games in the tournament. 4. Match ConditionsTeams might try different rules during the warmup games, like allowing a player to bat again after getting out, shuffling the batting order, or testing different bowling strategies. 5. ResultThe results of warm-up games are usually not officially recorded or do not carry points. The main purpose is to help teams prepare rather than to win. However, scorecards are published to keep the fans aware. 6. Playing TimeThe length of warm-up games can vary. Some might be a full day, while others can be shorter, depending on what the teams need. 7. UmpiresWarm-up games may not always have official umpires. Teams might agree to officiate the match themselves or use local umpires. In all major ICC tournaments, it’s the ICC who sets their umpiring panel; however, during the practice games for regular bilateral tournaments, the host cricket board organizes local umpires to officiate the games. 8. PitchThe pitch conditions in warm-up games are usually similar to what is expected in the main competition. Teams may request specific conditions to practice certain skills. To keep it in simple words, any run scored, any wicket taken, or any catch completed by a fielder, will not go down in record books. The warm-up games are only meant to help the team assess their final preparations and what combinations they need to play with. Overall, the rules for warm-up games are flexible, allowing teams to fine-tune their skills and strategies before the main competition. The warm-up games should give Captain Rohit Sharma a fair assessment of where his team is at the moment in their quest to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.
T20 World Cup 2024: Bat 1st or Bowl 1st – What should the Teams opt for?

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is here, taking place in the Caribbean and the USA. This is the third tournament in four years and it’s the first time the USA is hosting an ICC event. This introduces some new challenges for the teams given that the conditions out there would be completely alien. FRESH DYNAMICS IN T20sT20 leagues often test new ideas, but these innovations are showcased on a larger scale during the World Cup. In 2023, there was a significant increase in scoring rates across major T20 leagues like the IPL, PSL, and BBL, reaching an all-time high of 8.61. This trend has continued into 2024. Notably, the IPL, PSL, CPL, and T20 Blast all recorded their highest scoring rates ever in 2023. The IPL improved even more in 2024, reaching a scoring rate of 9.56, the highest in any T20 tournament. Batters like Travis Head have been destroying the bowling lineups like a child’s play. Especially the ones wearing his favorite blue jersey. Since the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, matches between the full time member nations have had a scoring rate of 8.59, the highest between World Cups. This sets the stage for the upcoming World Cup. With T20 cricket soo much evolved over the last couple of months and with challenging playing conditions in the Caribbean, teams need to make smart decisions, starting right at the toss. Should they bat first or bowl first? Playing Conditions During CPLIn the CPL, over the last three seasons, teams batting first won 48 out of 96 games. In day games, teams batting first won 61% of the time, while in night games, teams chasing won three out of five times. The average first-innings score in Caribbean T20s is 170 in day games and 169 in night games. Some venues favor batting first in day games, like Bridgetown, Tarouba, and Providence. At night, teams chasing win more often. Gros Islet is different, with teams setting targets doing better in night games, and an even split in day games. In Dallas, during the 2023 MLC, teams batting first won eight out of 12 games, including all three day games. In Lauderhill, teams batting first won four out of six games. Since April 2021, in 36 completed T20s at these venues, teams batting first have won 26. In 46 completed night games, teams chasing have a 23-22 win-loss record. Here’s the record for teams batting first in Day-Night Games on several venues across the West Indies and the USA. W-L Record for Teams Batting First Since April 2021 VENUE MATCHES WON LOST NR AVG 1st INNINGS TOTAL Providence 11 6 3 2 169 Tarouba 8 6 2 0 180 Bridgetown 8 6 1 1 171 Gros Islet 5 2 2 1 166 Florida 5 3 2 0 182 Dallas 3 3 0 0 173 Here’s the record for teams batting first in Night Games on several venues across the West Indies and the USA. W-L Record for Teams Batting First Since April 2021 VENUE MATCHES WON LOST NR AVG 1st INNINGS TOTAL Providence 15 6 9 0 175 Tarouba 4 1 3 0 146 Bridgetown 5 2 3 0 188 Gros Islet 12 7 4 1 171 Florida 1 1 0 0 150 Dallas 9 5 4 0 166 Considering the historical data from the past few years, teams need to carefully strategize their decision to bat or bowl first in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. WHAT SHOULD TEAMS OPT FOR?In day games, there is a clear advantage to batting first, particularly at venues like Bridgetown, Tarouba, and Providence, where teams batting first have a win percentage exceeding 66%. Conversely, in night games, chasing teams tend to perform better, with a balanced record in venues like Gros Islet and a notable advantage for chasing teams in Tarouba and Bridgetown. Dallas also shows a strong trend favoring teams batting first, regardless of the time of day. Thus, captains should consider batting first in day games to leverage the higher success rates, while opting to chase in night games could be a smarter approach to exploit the conditions and historical patterns. By making these informed decisions, teams can enhance their chances of emerging victorious in this highly competitive tournament. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

Daren Sammy holds the unique honor of having the stadium named after him. Additionally, Johnson Charles, another cricketer from Saint Lucia who achieved success in the T20 World Cup, has a stand named after him at the venue. The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean was not up to the mark with regard to the quality of the pitches produced. The players and the spectators were very unhappy with the overall tournament preparations.
