Does Plant-Based Nutrition Really Help Athletes?

One of the areas of intense interest in recent years has been plant-based nutrition and its effects on sports performance. Nutrition In Sports And Plant-Based Diets Interest in nutrition and plant-based diets have mostly come about because of the different varieties of dietary preferences athletes can take to improve their physical capabilities. Among the trends in dietary preference currently, the most prominent is plant-based food. But does it really benefit the athletes? Let’s dig deeper into the science behind plant-based diets and their impact on sports performance. Role Of Nutrition In Sports Science Proper nutrition has been advisable for a long time in sports science to maximize athletic performance. Whether working to increase strength, endurance, or to attain recovery, diet is essential. Plant-based food, which constitutes fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts, provides a wide range of key nutrients that are helpful for athletes. These include carbohydrates as energy sources, protein for repairing muscles and antioxidants to minimize inflammation and oxidative stress. Benefits Of Plant-Based Diet For Athletes According to new findings in sports science research, plant-based diets help athletes perform better. A well-balanced plant-based diet provides the body with all the required nutrients without excess saturated fats in animal-based diets. For instance, protein in plant-based foods such as lentils, chickpeas and quinoa is very essential in muscle recovery and overall health. They contain a wide variety of phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium, supporting energy production with a decreased risk of injury. Nutrition In Indian Athletes And Transition To Plant-Based Diets In India, too, the understanding of plant-based nutrition in sports is gaining popularity. India has had a long tradition of vegetarianism, and already, a significant proportion of the population consumes plant-based food; however, there is a noted recent shift toward an understanding of the nutritional needs of athletes, in whom issues regarding protein intake and overall energy reserves are common. Finally, research by sports science into nutrition among Indian athletes is now focusing on the benefits of plant-based foods in overcoming these issues. Optimize Diet For Performance And Recovery Sports nutrition is not only about consuming enough calories but it is also about the kind of balance present in macronutrients and micronutrients. Even athletes who follow a plant-based diet report several advantages such as maintaining healthy body weight, improved digestion, reduced inflammation. Such things are concerned with peak performance. Thus, focusing on whole, plant-based food improves overall health and enhances endurance and recovery. Plant-based food can support an athlete by providing nutrients that aid in performance at peak, recovery, and general health. Furthermore, with the help of sports science and continuous research in nutrition in sports, any athlete can be enabled to have a say in their choice on what to consume to optimize their career, regardless of their preference in diet. Mr. Shaji Prabhakaran Launches Association For Sports Industry Professionals (ASIP)

The Founder of The Sportz Planet, Mr. Rishi Sutrave had a chance to interview Mr. Shaji Prabhakaran on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, as Mr. Prabhakaran recently launched the Association For Sports Industry Professionals (ASIP). A Bit About Mr. Shaji Prabhakaran Mr. Shaji Prabhakaran is an Indian Football Administrator who has held roles in sports governance. He currently is a part of the Asian Football Confederation and South Asian Football Federation as the elected Executive Committee (board member) member. Prabhakaran previously served as the General Secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). He also served as the President of Football Delhi (Delhi Soccer Association). Prabhakaran worked as the FIFA Development Officer for South Central Asia. A native of Kerala and brought up in Bengal, Prabhakaran developed a passion for football at the age of 8. However, due to the lack of professional coaching and limited popularity of the sport in his school, he also engaged in volleyball and cricket during his early years. 1. What was your vision behind establishing the Association For Sports Industry Professionals? My vision behind establishing ASIP is to create a vibrant and unified platform that would foster professional development opportunities for the sports industry professionals, attain unprecedented growth in the sports sector, advocate collaborative approach, intensify networking opportunities and build credibility for policy advocacy. As I have found there is no organisation that is providing a platform for 365 days to the sports industry to come together, and without coming together the sports industry won’t grow to its potential in India. All these years I was waiting to be part of such a platform but eventually I thought to go ahead when I found that there are many from the industry looking for a platform to network and grow in the sports industry in India. 2. How will ASIP bridge the gap between various sectors within the sports industry? Our plan is to identify key growth sectors in the sports industry and create sectoral specific task forces involving domain experts from those sectors, and to have a focus approach to identify the gaps and work towards finding solutions to attain growth. Key growth sectors include sports infrastructure, spectator sports (leagues & mega events), sports technology, esports, sports apparel & equipment, sports marketing & sponsorship, sports education, sports tourism, sports media and broadcasting, sports science and high performance, school & college sports, sports turfs & manufacturing, etc. We will create dialogue forums between all the sectoral task forces to have a cohesive approach and that way we will be able to come up with purpose driven policy advocacy actions. Synergic approach would lead to focus on priority areas and thus, we will be able to advocate policies to bridge the gap. 3. How impactful do you consider networking in the current era? Networking is an essential element to cultivate professional growth in any industry and in the current era, though digital platforms provide added advantages for quick virtual networking opportunities, traditional networking opportunities remain significant in the current era. Therefore, ASIP is going to provide multifold networking opportunities through formal and informal options. I personally experienced the power of networking and having the right network in the right geography or in the right place helps in multiple ways. From learning to opening the toughest doors of opportunities and meeting those high achievers, your role models from the industry, and finding a lifelong mentor to co-founders to seed funders to investors, etc. What I believe is that, ASIP success and future growth are depended on this one key aspect, i.e. Networking. How strong ASIP is going to be in Networking aspects and that would define its success and future growth. 4. What challenges do you foresee in the growth of sports industry professionals in emerging markets and how can ASIP address them? The major challenge sports industry professionals would face are the following: 1. Limited job openings from middle to senior level positions in many sectors. There are serious funding gaps and capital is not easily available for many sports sectors. Thus, for the next 3-4 years there will be a big challenge unless we experience significant capital inflow in key growth sectors. 2. Not finding the right kind of job openings. Majority of young professionals get demotivated when they don’t find the right kind of job opening in their area of interest and this challenge will remain for the next few years. ASIP plans to create three levels of Career Counselors and also there is a thought to launch a mentorship programme to prepare and help young professionals and all our members in career advancement related issues and address the skill gap pertaining to specific sectors. Stay tuned for further updates. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.
BAI Proposes Salary Hike To Retain Badminton Coaches

BAI has been preparing a joint proposal with SAI to combat the increasing outflow of badminton coaches in India by rewarding them better pecuniary compensations. BAI To Increase Coaches’ Salary Most high-profile coaches of Indian badminton have fled the system owing to meagre financial compensation over the years. While there are more homegrown coaches than before, many leave for better opportunities. The BAI and SAI are working on a plan to retain those coaches and are keen on having a salary hike as part of the proposal. Former Players Join Coaching Ranks Through BAI Initiative In the last three years, leading players-turned-coaches have moved into full-time coaching positions. These include Parupalli Kashyap and RMV Gurusaidutt. They are currently training top men’s singles players such as H. S. Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth and Priyanshu Rajawat under chief national coach Pullela Gopichand. They are also mentoring youngsters such as Tharun Mannepalli, Anmol Kharb, Anuradha Upadhyaya, and Rakshitha Ramraj. Impact Of BAI On Men’s Doubles Coach Former Indian men’s doubles pair Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy, who have played in major competitions like Asian Games and Olympics, have now taken up the job of coaching young men’s doubles talent with a foreign coach in the form of Tan Kim Her at events like India Open. Lack Of Financial Compensation To Coaches The problem is that most of the experienced coaches are leaving because of the lack of financial compensation. For example, Mohammed Siyadatullah Siddiqui, who was coaching Saina Nehwal and Srikanth, moved to Oregon Badminton Academy in the U.S. last year. Also, World Championships bronze medalist and Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth decided to hang his boots from competitive badminton and coach at a US club in March 2024. Arun Vishnu, the man behind stars Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly’s rise, went back to Nagpur recently to take care of his elderly father-in-law. Coaches Highlight Financial Disparity Arun said that in the US, coaches earn between USD 8,000-10,000 per month. Indian coaches working with public sector undertakings (PSUs) earn around Rs 50,000 per month. The difference is more starkly evident now with the Paris Olympics around the corner. The Issue Of Inclusion Of Ex-Players Into BAI’s Structure It is not clear why players as senior as those of Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhat, Chetan Anand or Jwala Gutta – all of whom were former players and hence better positioned within the system — are not involved in the structure of national coaches. Most of them have set up their own academies subsequently. Sridhar, who used to be a coach of Lakshya Sen and of PV Sindhu, is known to have been promoted as men’s singles head coach to the Singapore Badminton Association. BAI Proposal For Sustainable Coaching In The Future To avoid loss of talent beyond that and making a future more sustainable, this BAI’s proposal works to give financial appeal to coaching positions such that experienced coaches may be retained in the national set up. Shruti Kotwal eyes 2026 Winter Olympics qualification, wishes skaters ahead of KIWG 2025

New Delhi, Jan. 20: Shruti Kotwal will have her eyes on the upcoming Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Ladakh even as she trains in the United States for the Asian Winter Games in February in China. India’s first professional woman speed skater took part in KIWG last year and produced some standout performances in her maiden appearance at these Games. The 33-year-old from Pune will be leading India’s charge in the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China from February 7-14. The sports ministry has cleared a squad of 41 athletes for AWG. These include speed skaters and their support staff. For Shruti, this will be her second appearance in the AWG after 2017, when the Asian meet was last held in Japan. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFCkDaRzDCj/?igsh=MTIwYzZ2OTk2amhsMw== “This will be my second Asian Winter Games and I’m thrilled to compete again. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and China consistently produce strong skaters who are technically and physically exceptional. I’ve faced some of these competitors in previous events and understand their strengths. It’s a tough field, but I see every race as an opportunity to push my limits and improve my own performance,” said Shruti in an interview with SAI Media. Shruti Kotwal is currently training at the Utah Olympic Oval in the US. Training at this indoor speed skating centre, which was built for the 2002 Winter Olympics, has played a major role in Shruti’s career. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFCkat_zL6c/?igsh=ZG5yZHZhczIzeGVz “Training in the US, especially at facilities like the Utah Olympic Oval, has been a game-changer. The exposure to world-class coaches, advanced training methodologies, and access to one of the fastest ice tracks in the world has significantly improved my technique, endurance, and speed. “Competing with and observing some of the best skaters here has pushed me to refine my skills and understand the finer details of the sport. The environment has been incredibly motivating and challenging, which has accelerated my progress,” said Shruti. The AWG will be a big opportunity to test herself against the best skaters in the world and qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics, said Shruti. “I’m focusing on the 500m and 1000m events for Olympic qualification. The timing requirements are incredibly challenging — sub-40 seconds for the 500m and under 1:20 for the 1000m. My Indian national record is 41.97 seconds and I need to skate under 40 seconds to qualify,” said Shruti. This will be the first time in China that India will be represented by such a large contingent of skaters. In 2017, there were just three athletes, all skaters. Several Indian speed skaters are training in Korea for Harbin 2025. At least 24 nations will take part in AWG. Shruti said the Khelo India Winter Games have been the ideal platform for skaters aspiring to make a mark in international tournaments. “Khelo India Winter Games brings everybody together. It really helps to promote the sport. We didn’t have that when we started and I think the skaters now are now very lucky,” said Shruti. The first leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will begin in Ladakh on January 23. Skating events will take place at the NDS Stadium and the Gupuks Pond in Leh. At least 150 ice speed skaters will be seen in action.
What Makes Concussion A Terrible Sports Injury?

In the field of sports science, concussion is often viewed as a serious condition because it is subtle in nature and may have long-term effects. The term “concussion” is often used interchangeably with the term “mild traumatic brain injury” (mTBI), however, its complexity and the effects on the nervous system can be much more serious than what meets the eye. How Brutal Concussion Can Be? The subtlety of concussion is one of the most disturbing features of this injury, especially in the world of sports. In as many as 90% of concussion cases, there is no loss of consciousness and many concussions go undiagnosed or unrecognized. Athletes may continue to participate in activities without knowing they have an injury. This is intimidating because such an interruption to normal brain functioning with no detectable structural abnormality on CT or MRIs from a concussion occurs. Thus, teaching athletes, coaches and trainers about the mostly invisible nature of brain injuries in sports remains to be crucial work in the sciences of sport. Metabolic And Physiological Impact Of Concussion The brain’s reaction to concussion entails a cascade of metabolic, physiological and microstructural changes that affect normal brain function. In the acute stages after the injury, neurotransmitters are released and brain metabolism slows down, which causes an energy crisis and reduces cerebral blood flow. These changes in brain metabolism and circulation can persist for days even though the symptoms themselves might have subsided. This process requires detailed understanding in the lines of sports science and recovery protocol for athletes. India, having drastically proliferated sports science in recent years, it is of utmost importance to understand and treat metabolic effects of concussion for an athlete’s safety. Long-Term Risks Of Repeated Concussions Another reason concussion is such a terrible sports injury is the long-term consequences of repeated head trauma. While one concussion may clear up in a few weeks, repeated concussions can lead to chronic conditions like Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a neurodegenerative disease that has been associated with mood disorders, cognitive impairments, and dementia, and it can be several years after multiple concussions. In sports injuries, particularly in contact sports, this points to the need for proper management and prevention strategies. Mechanisms Of Concussion Concussion occurs through acceleration forces, which are acting linearly as well as rotationally on the brain. Rotational forces cause maximum damage in terms of shear stresses, resulting in deformation of brain tissue, leading to axonal injury. Mostly diffuse axonal injury is provoked that is not evident in the eyes, however, its impact will continue for a very long time. An understanding of the contribution of concussive forces in its onset can also improve the enhancement of the protective features and better safeguarding measures at sports events through better safety precautions. Risk Of Second Impact Syndrome It is a significant danger of SIS, which can simply be said to be a phenomenon that occurs during which a person is hit by a second concussion before a total recovery from the first concussion. SIS most often results in devastating cerebral swelling and even proves fatal. Although very rare, SIS reminds everyone how dire proper diagnosis, rest, and monitoring for an athlete who has experienced a concussion are. Proper concussion management protocols are required in sports science, especially within the growing field of sports science in India. Addressing Concussion In Sports Concussion is the worst sports injury since it often appears invisible, leads to permanent damage to the brain and in case it is not handled well, its results can be quite severe. Sports science helps us understand the intricacies of concussion and its impact. Proper recognition, diagnosis and management of concussions are important for protecting athletes’ health in the short and long term, especially in sports environments where injuries in sports are a common concern. Through awareness and effective strategies, athletes can be better protected from the devastating effects of concussions. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
