LA Coliseum And SoFi Stadium To Co-Host 2028 Olympics Opening Ceremony

For the first time in the history the iconic Opening Ceremony of the Olympics is set to take place at two venues. History will be made when the Opening Ceremony of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be co-hosted by the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. By having the Opening Ceremony at the two venues, the event is being billed as the coming together of the past, the present and the future of sports.

While the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which has previously hosted the 1932 and 1984 editions of the Olympics, is more that 100 years old, the SoFi Stadium became operational in September 2020. Two separate listicles, one published by uk.finance.yahoo.com and the other published by investopedia.com, rate the SoFi Stadium as the most expensive sports stadium in the world. The stadium which is the home for American football team the Los Angeles Chargers has been constructed at a cost of over $5 billion.

There will be another piece of history written during these Games as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will become the first stadium in the world to have hosted more than two editions of the Olympic Games. The Coliseum will also have the distinction of being site of the Closing Ceremony for these Games.

The 2028 LA Olympics is slated from July 14 to July 30.

“The venues selected for the 2028 opening and closing ceremonies will highlight Los Angeles’ rich sporting history and cutting-edge future, showcasing the very best that L.A. has to offer on the world stage,” LA28 chairman and president Casey Wasserman.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Reynold Hoover who is the CEO of LA 28. “We’re going to be celebrating the past and we’re also going to be celebrating the future,” Hoover said.

The two venues will also be holding the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony of the LA Paralympic Games with SoFi Stadium hosting the Opening Ceremony on August 15 and the Coliseum hosting the Closing Ceremony on August 27.

“The Paralympic closing ceremony marks the final moments of the LA28 Games, creating an unforgettable legacy that will forever connect the Olympic and Paralympic movement to Los Angeles,” LA28 said in a release.

The finer details of how the ceremonies will be staged are still be worked upon.
