Fernando Alonso has committed his future to Aston Martin, dispelling any speculation about him replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season. The two-time former world champion, now 42, has signed a new contract with Aston, ensuring his presence with the team until 2026, coinciding with the introduction of new regulations.
“I’m here to stay,” he confirmed. Alonso, long considered a possible successor to Hamilton at Mercedes, has forged a successful partnership with Aston since joining from Alpine. He delivered strong performances last season, securing six podiums, including three second-place finishes.
Hamilton’s surprising move to Ferrari in 2025 prompted rumors of Alonso teaming up with George Russell at Mercedes. However, Thursday’s announcement firmly anchors Alonso to Aston Martin for the foreseeable future.
Despite a winless streak of 11 years, Alonso remains a formidable force in Formula 1, with 32 Grand Prix victories to his name.
Aston’s team principal, Mike Krack, expressed delight at securing Alonso’s long-term commitment, emphasizing their shared determination for success. Krack praised Alonso’s dedication, noting his hunger for success, peak physical condition, and unwavering focus on making Aston Martin Aramco competitive.
The multi-year agreement extends Alonso’s tenure with Aston Martin beyond 2026, coinciding with their works power unit partnership with Honda. Krack expressed optimism for the future, anticipating further success with Alonso at the helm.
Alonso is on track to become the first driver to participate in 400 Grand Prix races later this season, currently standing eighth in the 2024 standings after the first four rounds.
