WPL 2024 : Perry’s panache derails the Mumbai Local.

The latest episode of ‘Cricket Ka Queendom’ saw two of the most decorated franchises of the TATA WPL take on each other. The Mumbai Indians were up against the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Arun Jaitley stadium at New Delhi. And it was a complete Ellyse Perry show all the way.  It was the RCB Women who won the toss & they asked the girls from Mumbai to bat first. It was Ellyse Perry who took charge with both the bat & the ball. Firstly, she made the ball talk with her fiery nip-backers and made the Mumbai batters dance to her tunes. Perry, with her six wicket haul (6 for 15) restricted the Mumbai Indians to a modest total of 113.  Mumbai Indians were off to a good start with their top order batters producing a clinic. Openers, Hayley Matthews and S Sajana added 43 runs together. However the Mumbai innings soon had to deal with breakthroughs as Perry provided a masterpiece with her seam bowling. First she crashed the ball onto the off stump and got rid of Sajeevan Sajana (30 off 21). Perry stunned the crowd with the next delivery, as Harmanpreet Kaur (0 off 1) played on a delivery from around the fifth-stump line which ended up hitting the stumps. Perry had her chances to grab the hat-trick but Amelia Kerr with the bat didn’t make it happen.  Kerr couldn’t survive in front of Perry’s pace for too long. In the very next over by Ellyse Perry, Kerr (2 off 5) came down the pitch but was beaten on the inside edge by the one that angled in. The not-out decision was reviewed and the Mumbai Indians all-rounder found plumb in front. Next up was Amanjot Kaur who smashed her first delivery towards the fence for a four. But another nip-backer from Perry cost the Mumbai Indians the wicket of Amanjot Kaur (4 off 2). It was a deja-vu for Perry when Pooja Vastrakar (6 off 10) managed to get a boundary off one of her deliveries and then got dismissed to a crashing off-stump delivery by Ellyse Perry the very next ball.  Perry added the finishing touches as she trapped Mumbai’s Nat-Sciver Brunt (10 off 15) with an immaculate delivery.  As Ellyse Perry took 6 wickets and continued to rattle the stumps. Mumbai Indians stuttered and lost their last nine wickets for just 48 runs.  In the 1st innings it was Perry with the ball, in the 2nd innings it was Perry with the bat. The opening pair for the RCB didn’t fire much. In came Ellyse Perry and took charge. She alongside Richa Ghosh maintained the score rate and stitched a fantastic partnership. The Perry-Ghosh duo combined for nine fours and three sixes, securing RCB’s position in the Eliminator. It was a career best 6 wicket haul for Ellyse Perry. Perry managed to pile 40 runs off 38 deliveries and remained unbeaten at the end of the game. Her innings with the bat included 5 fours and a six. RCB had an upper hand in the feisty duel as they won by 7 wickets and managed to secure a spot in the eliminator. Perry and Co. will now play on Friday after their opponents will be finalised after today’s game between the Delhi Capitals and the Gujarat Giants. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

Mitchell Marsh – Frontrunner to lead Australia at the t20 World Cup.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh recently received a strong backing to lead the Australian Men’s t20 setup. In a recent interview, Australian Men’s Cricket team coach & one of the three selectors as well, Andrew McDonald endorsed Mitchell Marsh as the most suitable candidate for leading the Australian Men’s t20 team at the ICC Men’s t20 World Cup 2024 which is to be held in the Caribbean and the USA in June. “I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas,” said McDonald. He later also added “We think he’s (Marsh) the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course.” Mitch Marsh, who now is an integral part of the Australian cricketing set up has led Australia to victories in the T20I series against South Africa and the West Indies. Recently, Mitchell Marsh led Australia to a clean sweep against New Zealand in a T20I series.  The captaincy news has marked a significant moment for the 32 year old, hard hitting Aussie all-rounder whose international resurgence began during Australia’s charge to victory at the ICC t20 World Cup 2021, where he was the player of the match in the final. There is no doubt that Mitchell Marsh would be carrying enough weight on his shoulders, given that he is an all-rounder and now a potential International t20 cricket Captain as well. Marsh would be handy with both the bat and the ball. In 54 T20Is, Marsh has aggregated 1432 runs with nine half-centuries besides 17 wickets at a 22.76 average.  Australia won’t be having any t20 assignments before the ICC Men’s t20 World Cup but their marquee players in the form of Mitch Marsh, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc & Glenn Maxwell are set to gain t20 experience by displaying and polishing their t20 skills at the IPL, which is just round the corner.  The ICC Men’s t20 World Cup is all set to begin on the 1st of June, 2024 with Australia being a part of group B in the tournament with the likes of England, Oman, Scotland and Namibia as their opponents.  The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye.

Leap Gymnastics joins hands with Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association.

The four-year partnership will aim to propel the development of Gymnastics in Maharashtra. Mumbai, 11 March 2024: In a bid to revolutionize the landscape of gymnastics in Maharashtra, Leap Gymnastics, a pioneering initiative by the JSW Group, has entered into a four-year partnership with the Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association (MAGA), taking on the exclusive role of ‘Development Partner.’ This strategic alliance underscores a collective commitment to invigorate the sport’s growth trajectory in the region. At the heart of this collaboration lies a concerted effort to implement a comprehensive competitive framework and pathway, aimed at broadening participation avenues for gymnasts across Maharashtra. The collaboration stands as a testament to the shared vision of both entities to foster growth within the gymnastics ecosystem, with meticulous adherence to the principles outlined by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). India has been facing several challenges in the development of gymnastics as a prominent sport with only two gymnasts qualifying for the Olympics in the last 70 years. One key reason is the lack of widespread infrastructure and quality training programs. This is being solved by JSW’s Leap Gymnastics that currently operates four state-of-the-art training centers in Mumbai, catering to over 1000 aspiring gymnasts. With a strategic vision to proliferate the sport nationwide, Leap Gymnastics endeavors to launch many such centers across India in the coming years, extending its reach to a broader demographic while ensuring access to unparalleled infrastructure and meticulously structured training methodologies. Tanvi Jindal, Founder of Leap Gymnastics, articulated the organization’s mission, stating, “At Leap Gymnastics, our ethos revolves around furnishing a world-class training environment, underpinned by an internationally acclaimed curriculum. Our aim is to provide our gymnasts with the opportunity to embark on a journey of excellence, ultimately representing the nation on prestigious global platforms.” Another significant obstacle hindering the success of Indian gymnasts on the global stage lies in the limited opportunities for progression from beginner to high-performance levels. Currently, the structure of competitions in India primarily revolves around age categories, each with demanding skill prerequisites. This rigid system often proves overly challenging for young gymnasts, leading to frustration and dropout rates. The lack of flexibility in competition formats fails to cater to the diverse skill levels and developmental needs of athletes.  “This was a critical issue that was impeding the growth and potential of gymnasts in our country. To address this issue, we’ve developed a more adaptive and inclusive approach to competitions, focusing on skill progression rather than age-based criteria. This shift will provide aspiring gymnasts with the necessary support and encouragement to thrive in the sport, ultimately bolstering India’s presence in international gymnastics arenas” Tanvi added.  Through the partnership with Leap Gymnastics and MAGA are establishing a unified competitive framework for both Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) across all clubs and districts in the state. This progressive competition pathway is developed by FIG Technical Expert, Kym Dowdell and is modelled on those that have been implemented by other nations. As the initiative reaches the grassroots, there will be an increase in participation opportunities through the introduction of multiple level-based competitions, enhancing their development in the discipline. Moreover, the partnership aims to provide a well-defined pathway for high-performance development, empowering athletes to harbor ambitions of representing the nation on the international platform. Sanjay Shete, President of MAGA, highlighted the significance of this partnership, affirming, “This 4-year partnership will facilitate the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and industry insights, ultimately contributing to the overall systematic and long-term development, participation, and performance of gymnastics within the state of Maharashtra. Our concerted focus on crafting a robust competitive framework and pathway epitomizes our unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity within the sport.”  To kickstart the dissemination of knowledge and technical proficiency, Leap Gymnastics recently conducted an orientation workshop in Balewadi, Pune, engaging over 250 coaches, judges, and officials from the state. Subsequent endeavors include a comprehensive coaches and judges education course slated for April and May, aimed at familiarizing state officials with technical guidelines and judging protocols under the new framework. Ria Vardhan, CEO of Leap Gymnastics, emphasized the transformative impact of this alliance, asserting, “Together with the MAGA, Leap Gymnastics is not just building a partnership; we’re constructing a foundation for the future of gymnastics in Maharashtra. Our shared commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and systematic development will propel aspiring gymnasts to reach new heights, fostering a culture of achievement and empowerment across the state. This alliance marks the beginning of an exciting journey towards unlocking the full potential of gymnastics in Maharashtra and beyond.”

Mumbai, 12th March, 2024: The ISL’s 10th season is turning the corner before the home stretch, and holders of the ISL League Winners Shield, Mumbai City FC, are well and truly on course to defend their crown. The Islanders have been on a 6-game unbeaten run, and are now doubt looking to up the ante, in what has been quite an eventful season for them. Opening up about the same, goal-keeper Phurba Lachenpa believes it has been a good season so far for the team. “The season so far has been good for us, considering all the things that have happened in the past few months, including the change in head coach. We have had a few injuries and change in personnel also, but we are still fighting for the top spot. And now we have to finish it with silverware,” said Lachenpa. With 7 clean sheets in the 15 games he has played, Lachenpa has been one of the mainstays in the Mumbai City FC line-up. And according to him, every game from now onwards is like a final. “Each game is very important for us now in the season, there are very few left, and it is very tight at the top of the table. There are three-four teams fighting for the top spot. As one of the top clubs in India, we have a certain set of expectations from ourselves. So, going to the match, we have put our best foot forward, and try to win all the games. In the demanding stretch ahead, facing formidable contenders, Lachenpa recognises a need beyond mere skill—a unity of purpose to propel the team forward. “We have only a few games left, and now it is all about the mental strength and how far we can push ourselves. And if we keep ourselves mentally strong and keep pushing till the final whistle, I think our momentum will help us progress, and we can hopefully end the season with silverware,” he signed off.

Jess Jonassen reflects on Delhi Capitals’ thrilling one-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore

New Delhi, 11 March 2024: The JSW and GMR Co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals registered a thrilling one-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore to secure their place in the playoffs of the WPL 2024 for the second straight season. Jemimah Rodrigues (58 runs off 36) and Alice Capsey (48 runs off 32) starred in batting as they helped Delhi Capitals post 181/5 in 20 overs. Royal Challengers Bangalore came close to chasing the target, courtesy of Richa Ghosh’s late onslaught of 29-ball 51, but fell short as the home side clinched the last-ball win. Needing 17 runs in the last over, Richa smashed two sixes off Jess Jonassen’s bowling to bring the equation down to 2 off 1, but faltered in the end.  Speaking about the grueling last over, Jonassen stated, “I internally knew that at the start of the over, if I could set it up without going for a boundary in one of the first two balls, then we were sort of well and truly on the front foot. But, getting hit for a massive six down the ground was not ideal, and then I gave it too much air for her in the second last ball.” The Australian spinner, who whipped the bails off to dismiss Richa, added, “In the last ball, I targeted on her toes, I think executed well and thankfully it went straight to Shafali, who got it in quick enough. And coming away with the one-run win felt nice after the heartbreaking loss by one run in the previous game.” The 31-year-old left-arm spinner is currently leading the charts of top wicket-takers in the season so far (10 wickets in five matches) and is holding the Purple Cap. Reflecting on her performance, Jonassen said, “Since I’ve got that Purple Cap on my head, I’ve been quite ordinary with the ball. Ideally, I’d love to keep taking wickets, but I haven’t been as consistent as I was in those first couple of matches that I’ve played.” “I’m probably my harshest critic. It’s something to be mindful of and keep rectifying.  I always want to try and do my best for whatever team I’m a part of,” she concluded. The Delhi Capitals will square off against Gujarat Giants in their next match of the WPL 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, 13 March 2024.
