WSL Club Revenues Soar By 34% Amid Record-Breaking 2023–24 Season

The 2023–24 season proved to be a landmark year for the Women’s Super League (WSL), with total club revenues surging by 34% to reach £65 million ($88.2 million) — the highest figure in the league’s history, according to new report published by Deloitte Sports Business Group.

The Women’s Super League is the highest level of women’s club football in England.

For the first time, all 12 WSL clubs surpassed the £1 million revenue mark individually, driven by significant growth in commercial deals and match-day income. Commercial revenue alone now contributes to 40% of total WSL club income, reflecting a rapidly growing interest from brands and fans alike.

The rise in revenues comes on the heels of England’s runner-up finish to Spain in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup — a performance that further amplified interest in the domestic game. Deloitte anticipates this momentum will continue, forecasting total WSL revenues to hit £100 million by the 2025–26 season, following next month’s UEFA Women’s European Championship in Switzerland.

“Women’s football in England is evolving rapidly,” said Tim Bridge, the lead partner at the Deloitte Sports Business Group.

“While there are still challenges, the foundations for a passionate and engaged fan base are clearly in place. Major international tournaments offer key visibility boosts, but long-term growth must come from within the domestic league.”

A significant portion of the revenue growth came from four powerhouse clubs — Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City — who collectively accounted for nearly two-thirds of the league’s earnings. Arsenal led the pack with £15.3 million, followed by Chelsea (£11.5m), Manchester United (£9.2m), and Manchester City (£6.6m).

Chelsea are the reigning champions of the Women’s Super League. The London-based club has won the last six seasons of the Women’s Super League. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal are the most successful club in the league’s history having won the title a record 15 times.

In May Reuters reported that Reditt co-founder acquired a 10% stake in Chelsea’s women football team.

These record-breaking figures underscore the WSL’s rising stature and the growing commercial viability of women’s football in England, setting a promising trajectory for future seasons.
