T20 World Cup Winner vs IPL winner – who gets a bigger paycheque?
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup winners take home a prize money of US $10 million / INR 832,800,000. The winner takes home a cheque of US $4,00,000 and the runners-up win US $2,00,000.
On the other hand, the IPL 2024 Champion – Kolkata Knight Riders won the trophy and a cheque of Rs 20 Crore. The runners-up – Sunrisers Hyderabad got Rs 13 Crore.
IPL Prize Money Over The Years
When the IPL began in 2008, it changed how cricket was viewed and increased prize money significantly. In the first two seasons (2008 and 2009), the winning team got Rs 4.8 crore, and the runner-up received Rs 2.4 crore. Back then, this was the highest prize money for any cricket event. With strong support from sponsors like DLF, the IPL quickly became a major event.
Fifteen years later, the IPL is still the top cricket tournament in the world, offering the highest prize money: Rs 20 crore for the winning team and Rs 13 crore for the runner-up.
The prize money has increased four times since the start, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to increase it more in the future.
Right now, the total prize money for teams is Rs 46.5 crore. The third-place team gets Rs 7 crore, and the fourth-place team earns Rs 6.5 crore. This prize structure has been the same for the past three seasons.
To make the league more exciting, individual prizes have also increased. The top batter receives the Orange Cap and Rs 15 lakh, and the top bowler gets the Purple Cap and Rs 15 lakh. The Emerging Player of the tournament wins Rs 20 lakh, and the Most Valuable Player gets Rs 12 lakh.
Other awards, like the Power Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season, and Game Changer of the Season, come with prizes of Rs 15 lakh and Rs 12 lakh each.

IPL 2024 Prize Money Breakdown
For the past few years, the prize money has stayed the same. This year, it is reported that the payouts will remain unchanged. The total prize money for IPL 2024 is Rs 46.5 crore.
IPL Winners Prize Money
From this prize money, the champions will get Rs 20 crore, and the runners-up will receive Rs 13 crore. The teams finishing third and fourth will take home Rs 7 crore and Rs 6.5 crore, respectively.
With the IPL offering more money to the winners and comparatively more lucrative franchise contracts to the players, it won’t be surprising if players soon prioritize IPL over international cricket.
