French Open 2024: Was Alexander Zverev Unlucky at Roland Garros, due to lack of Hawk Eye technology?

Zverev's bid for his first Grand Slam title was derailed by a contentious umpiring decision at French Open 2024.

In the action packed French Open 2024 final, Alexander Zverev found himself on the verge of claiming his maiden Grand Slam title. However, a contentious moment in the deciding set significantly altered the course of the match, leaving Zverev and tennis fans worldwide reflecting on what could have been. What’s the drama all about? The drama unfolded in the fifth set when Zverev, ranked fourth in the world, was battling fiercely against Carlos Alcaraz. At a critical juncture, with the 5th set finely poised, a pivotal call by the chair umpire sparked intense controversy.  Alcaraz had hit a second serve that was initially called out, which would have given Zverev a crucial break back opportunity, leveling the set at 2-2. However, the umpire overruled the call, declaring Alcaraz’s serve in, much to Zverev’s disbelief and dismay. Was this the turning point? This decision proved to be a turning point. Hawk-Eye technology, which provides precise tracking of ball placement, later revealed that Alcaraz’s serve had indeed landed out by a mere 2 millimeters. This revelation left Zverev visibly frustrated, as he argued vehemently with the umpire over what he believed to be a critical error in judgment. Following this controversial incident, Alcaraz capitalized on the momentum swing. He held his serve and went on to dominate the remainder of the set, eventually clinching the match and his first French Open title with a hard-fought victory of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, after an exhausting battle lasting over four hours. Disappointment Expressed In PublicIn his post-match reflections, Zverev expressed his disappointment with the pivotal call, acknowledging its significant impact on the outcome. He lamented the missed opportunity to level the set early on, which could have potentially altered the final result in his favor.  Despite his frustration, Zverev credited Alcaraz for his outstanding performance, particularly in the latter stages of the match where the Spaniard displayed resilience and skill under pressure. Why no Hawk-Eye Technology in Paris? The controversial moment did not go unnoticed by tennis enthusiasts and commentators alike. Many voiced their criticism of Roland Garros’ decision not to implement Hawk-Eye technology for line calls sooner, arguing that such technology could have prevented this kind of contentious situation. Calls for greater reliance on technological aids in tennis officiating grew louder in the aftermath of this incident. Looking ahead, the French Open organizers announced that starting from 2025, Hawk-Eye technology will be integrated into the tournament, aiming to enhance accuracy and fairness in officiating decisions. Despite the disappointment of the outcome, Zverev remained gracious in defeat, acknowledging the unpredictability of sports and the human element involved in officiating. He emphasized the need for umpires to strive for accuracy in critical moments, acknowledging that errors can happen but hoping for improvements in the future. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz celebrated a historic victory, becoming the youngest man to win Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.  His resilience and determination throughout the match earned him praise and admiration from fans and fellow players alike, cementing his status as a rising star in the world of tennis. Zverev, competing in his fourth straight semi-final in Paris, finally broke the barrier to become the second German man to reach the Roland Garros title clash in the Open Era and match Michael Stich’s feat from 1996. He also banished painful memories of a serious ankle injury in the 2022 semi-final against Nadal, while coming through tough matches this year. “To go deep and to win a Grand Slam, you have to go through difficulties and you have to go through a lot of ups and downs,” said Zverev, who won the match after Ruud was hampered by a stomach issue. Paolini became a professional player in 2011, however before this year, she had never made it past the second round of a major tournament. She first made it into the main draw of a Slam in 2019, at the age of 23. Standing at 5’4″. In 2024, Paolini had a standout year. She reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and won the WTA 1000 event in Dubai. Roland Garros 2024 Finals Prediction Watching Paolini’s recent rise has been exciting. She doesn’t usually overpower her opponents. However, on the days when her forehand is strong (like in her semifinal win against Andreeva), she can challenge them. On the other hand, Swiatek at the French Open is a tough opponent. The 23-year-old from Poland has an impressive record of 31 wins and just 1 loss in her last 32 French Open games. Swiatek has beaten Paolini twice before without losing. Paolini, who had never made it past the round of 16 in a Grand Slam before, has reached this final from relative obscurity. Her wins over Rybakina in three sets and Andreeva in two sets were great, however, nothing suggests Swiatek will struggle in the Grand Slam Final. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Novak Djokovic’s Roland Garros’ Withdrawal: Everything You Need To Know

A Meniscus tear that led to knee injury has forced three times Roland Garros Champion, Novak Djokovic to opt out of the tournament.

Novak Djokovic’s run in Paris has come to an abrupt end. The Serb has confirmed that he is withdrawing from the Roland Garros tournament. Reason – a Meniscus tear that led to knee injury. He was due to play the Quarter-Final against Norwegian Casper Ruud. However, the 37-year-old never took to the court.  “I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from the #RolandGarros,” read Novak’s official statement. Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal meant Italian Jannik Sinner will now become the world number one player come Monday, June 10th. This comes as a triple blow for Djokovic’s fans. First, the injury, second the French Open title defense, and now vacating the world number one spot. The injury looks really bad, at least for someone at 37. Remember, the great Roger Federer could never recover after suffering from them.  Despite winning the Roland Garros title three times, Djokovic has always found clay courts to be challenging. This time, the challenge was on and off the court too. In the game against Francisco Cerundolo, Novak kept complaining to the chair umpire, the organisers, that the court is slippery. However, none of them heard his plea. The moment was recorded on camera, and the post went viral. The Serb can be seen mocking the chair umpire and the on-court staff for continuing the match, despite unfavourable conditions. The result – Djokovic’s injury forced him to quit the Roland Garros, right at the business end.
