IPL 2025: BCCI Looks for Saudi Arabia as Venue for Mega Auction
BCCI is looking at Riyadh and Jeddah as possible destinations for the much-awaited IPL 2025 mega auction that is scheduled to take place in the last week of November. It was earlier considered to be held in Dubai, however not anymore. The BCCI officials are said to have found it challenging to source a suitable venue or hotel in Saudi Arabia since the costs have gone higher than what it used to be in Dubai where the last IPL auction took place successfully in December 2023. Even though the Indian Premier League franchises and BCCI boast of financial muscles, the search for the right location seems tight. London First Perturbation London was initially considered, but BCCI removed the UK from their list citing unfavourable cold weather at this time of the year. Now, they are eyeing a venue that will easily accommodate an auction spread over two days and a huge IPL entourage involving 10 franchise representatives and other major broadcasters like Jio and Disney Star. IPL Governing Council to Release New Retention Rules Amid Speculations
The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council will discuss new retention rules during their meeting in Bengaluru. The much-awaited announcement on the retention rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected soon, as the IPL Governing Council (GC) convenes today at 11:30 AM at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru. The notices for the meet were dispatched only on Friday evening, and it is quite evident that the decision-making process has hastened, leading to widespread speculation about the kind of retention policy the BCCI would select. Mega-Auction Expected in November, Possibly in the Gulf The retention rules are expected to come into play big time while determining team strategies before the mega-auction, which is stated to be scheduled tentatively for late November. The auction is likely to happen overseas, and cities in the Gulf are said to be battling for the hosting rights. The strong contender has emerged as Saudi Arabia and Riyadh is likely to host the event if the GC gives nod to it. Retention Decision May Depend On General Body Meeting While an announcement is likely to be made post the much-awaited GC meeting later today, the final decision on retention is now said to await the all-important general body meeting scheduled for Sunday in Bengaluru. It would ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are in symmetry when the official word is spilled. Number of Retentions to Be Speculated Speculations regarding the number of players retained are rife, with some guessing between 2 and 8 players. More than likely, the BCCI will have to compromise on the numbers on the retention list at 5-6 players, along with the right to match. Then owners of the IPL teams are consulted by the BCCI in a July meeting to get their feedback on key matters, including retention. The details are expected to be finalized here today and with that setting the stage for another auction ahead of IPL 2025. Cricket fans can now wait with bated breath for the official announcement. IPL 2025 to Stick with 74 Matches Amid Player Workload Concerns
The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will remain at 74 matches. The same number will be seen as in the last three seasons, despite the IPL having planned for one more game on its initial schedule for next year. According to reports, the IPL had outlined a growing schedule in its media rights tender for the 2023-27 cycle. This was said to project the next two seasons with 84 matches each in 2025 and 2026, then increase to 94 by 2027. Player Load Identified However, the IPL authorities have barred expansion in 2025 as they say that player load for Indians needs to be managed. This relates particularly to the WTC final where India will participate on June 11 at Lord’s, wherein players will need sufficient rest and preparation. BCCI on the Player’s Well-being Confirming recently, the outgoing BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that though the contract allows for up to 84 matches, the board is prioritizing player well-being. He also brought to notice the fact that the discretion to organize the IPL with either 74 or 84 matches each season lies with the BCCI. For 2025, they have opted for the conservative number. Media Rights and Special Package The BCCI sold the media rights of the IPL for 48,390.5 crores in 2022, for a sum approximating USD 6.2 billion, packaged in four categories including one, for instance, which contained high-profile matches such as playoff games. With an increase in the total number of games in the IPL, the number of matches in that special package rose and it included 18 with the total number of games amounting to 74. Had the IPL had been expanded to 84 matches, that special package would have increased to 20 games. IPL Tentative Schedule 2025 It’s not yet officially confirmed, however IPL 2025 probably will take place from mid-March to late May. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Yash Dayal’s Maiden Test Match Call-Up After 5 Sixes Nightmare
Imagine being the guy whose name resonates with school buses, not in cheers, but rather in taunts. Such was life for nearly a year for Yash Dayal after Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Rinku Singh smashed him for five consecutive sixes in an IPL 2023 game where Dayal was representing the Gujrat Titans (GT). His quiet neighborhood in Allahabad had a new anthem overnight: “Rinkuuuuu Singh, Rinkuuu Singh, five sixes, five sixes!” His father, Chanderpal Dayal, too, stopped going outdoors, lest he became the subject of lots of fun and ridicule. His mother, Radha, stopped eating altogether, trying to understand why her son wasn’t saying a word. Family Power-Up Mode Activated! While most would’ve crumbled, Yash Dayal’s family went full “motivational speaker” on him. His father cited Stuart Broad, who bounced back after being smashed for six sixes by Yuvraj Singh and explained to Yash that he soon is going to represent India. Yash Dayal went into overdrive-changing from “the guy who got hit for five sixes” to “the guy taking wickets for fun.“ RCB to the Rescue Released by the Gujarat Titans, Yash Dayal found a new home in Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as IPL 2024 came around. Boy, did he deliver! With 15 wickets in 14 matches, Dayal wasn’t the punchline anymore; he was one of the main guys who took RCB into the playoffs and showed them that he was made of sterner stuff. Redemption Arc: Duleep Trophy Edition The ultimate revenge of Yash Dayal was not some viral social media post but a spell of fire in the Duleep Trophy 2024, in which he knocked over Mayank Agarwal and Riyan Parag in a jiffy. The selectors could no longer look the other way-the call-up came for the India Test squad for the Bangladesh series beginning on September 19, 2024. From Taunts to Triumph It has been a fairytale-like ride from five-sixes humiliation to Test cricket glory for Yash’s family. A chance to make his test match debut, Yash Dayal’s story is about how the best comebacks always happen after the toughest blows-or, in this case, five massive sixes. Jay Shah Elected as New ICC Chairman, Set to Usher in a New Era for Cricket
The 35-year-old Jay Shah created history when he was elected as the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary is all set to take over as the new ICC Chairman, starting from December 1, after Greg Barclay. Shah will have a three-year term but is allowed to extend his tenure for another three years. Unopposed Election Marks Shah’s Rise Shah was elected as no other nominations came in against him. The ICC also confirmed he was the sole nominee, with a couple of sets of nominations coming in for him by the 16 existing directors of the ICC. According to the regulations of the ICC, the candidate need not file the nomination papers, and thus it was pretty easy for the election of Shah himself. From BCCI to ICC Shah, who assumes the new assignment in the ICC, has got to go out of BCCI as secretary-a position he has held since 2019. The first major job for Shah as ICC Chairman is to appoint a new Independent Woman Director in place of Indra Nooyi after the latter completed her recent tenure. He will also have to deal with the issue of Disney Star seeking a renegotiation of the $3 billion broadcast deal. Besides, his other immediate task will be finding an adequate replacement for his stint with the BCCI. A Vision for International Cricket Growth In his maiden statement as ICC Chairman-elect, Shah outlined a future vision for the sport at large, with particular emphasis on the sport’s impending inclusion into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shah was all ears over the fact that the opportunity to come would prove pivotal in cricket’s attempt to spread its wings around the world. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.“ Innovative Leadership for a New Era Shah said that new ideas and innovation have to be embraced to increase cricket’s popularity across the world. He even considers the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics to be a moment when the growing graph of cricket began. “While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways” added Shah. A New Chapter for the ICC The ICC hailed Shah’s tenure thus: “Shah’s election marks a new chapter for the ICC as it seeks to expand the game’s reach and continue its evolution on the global stage.“ As Jay Shah prepares to take on this prestigious role, the cricketing world will keenly watch how this vision shapes the future of the sport. Shikhar Dhawan Retires: Top 5 Knocks Of Gabbar In International Cricket
Very few cricketers evoke the same flair and tenacity as Shikhar Dhawan. Fondly nicknamed “Gabbar,” Shikhar Dhawan’s career has spanned a decade and is a story of grit, elegance, and an undying love for the game. His journey from the dust-bowl grounds of Delhi to the pinnacle of international cricket shall be remembered not only for the runs he scored but also for the style in which he played the game—always with an infectious smile and an aggressive yet graceful style. On the day Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement from international cricket, what needed to be done was to turn back and see those innings which shaped his legacy. Be it his dazzling debut or the match-winning performances in high-pressure games, Dhawan’s career forms a collection of iconic moments forever etched in the memory of cricket fans globally. Here, revisit five of his most memorable innings that define his contribution to Indian cricket. 1. Debut – 187 vs Australia, 2010 Dhawan’s Test debut against Australia was nothing short of spectacular. Facing a formidable Australian bowling attack, the Delhi-born cricketer announced his arrival with a breathtaking 187, setting the record for the highest score by an Indian on Test debut. His innings was adjudged to be an exemplary combination of confidence and skill which put his skillful abilities with the bat in the limelight and scripted the foundation for India’s victory. This knock not only secured the victory but was also a starting point in Dhawan’s journey as one of the pivotal figures in the Indian batting line-up. 2. Champions Trophy 2013 – 137 vs England The situation was clear: any runs would count in the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2013. That 137 for Dhawan was of paramount importance in the context of India’s chase. His association with Virat Kohli turned out to be the deciding factor, and his ability to perform under pressure earned him the Player of the Tournament award. This knock testified more to his ability to rise to any situation and play match-winning innings whenever it really mattered. 3. ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 – 137 vs South Africa One of Dhawan’s most memorable innings was saved for a strong South African bowling attack during the 2015 ICC World Cup. His 137 off 146 balls helped India post a challenging total and secure a crucial win against one of the tournament’s top contenders. Playing in Melbourne, Dhawan’s knock broke India’s jinx against South Africa in World Cups and proved he can perform on the biggest stage. 4. India’s Tour Of Sri Lanka 2017 – 190 vs Sri Lanka Dhawan’s 190 off 168 balls against Sri Lanka during the Galle Test was an example of his attacking bent of mind in the game’s longer format. His blistering innings set up the scene for a comprehensive Indian victory, underlining his reputation as one of the most dangerous batsmen in the team. This aggressive and incisive knock would go a long way in proving that Dhawan has the mettle to dominate any bowling attack in any format. 5. This not only reinstated his place in the Test team but also proved that Dhawan could adapt and do well in any situation. As Shikhar Dhawan walks into the sunset of international cricket, it will be recalled not only for the runs he scored but also for the manner in which he played the game—being infectious with his smile, fearless in his approach, and always rising to the occasion. His legacy thus is one of flair, resilience and rising to an occasion with what looked like never-say-die attitude—his contribution to Indian cricket, in general, cannot be belittled. Questions Loom Before The Border-Gavaskar Trophy
With the flame already ignited for one of the most famous rivalries in the history of cricket, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 is going to be nothing short of action and intense drama. Though a couple of months are still left, many questions are yet to be answered as the series gets anticipated. If Not RO-KO Then Who? Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been India’s batting mainstays for more than a decade now. The Virat-Rohit duo has piled up 2629 runs for India while playing against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although Rohit Sharma cemented his place in the Indian red ball side in 2018, he has been a major contributor when it comes to scoring runs. However, considering the age in the legs of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma it is important for someone else from the batting order to step up and deliver it for the Indian Cricket Team. While the hopes rest on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, it would be interesting to see if they can meet the expectations by facing the challenge down under. Who Will Join Jasprit Bumrah? Australia is known for producing fast and bouncy decks unlike India where the pitches are more spin dominant. To give Australia a tough fight, India need more resources in their fast bowling cartel to join Jasprit Bumrah and deliver. Fast bowlers, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur have a taste of wickets from down under. A couple of these guys alongside Bumrah might make a quality seam bowling attack. Steve Smith The Opener Or Steve Smith The Middle Order Batter? Any cricket fan who follows the Border-Gavaskar Trophy might be aware of how much Steve Smith is in love with scoring runs against India. Smith, till the end of last year used to bat in between number 3 to number 5 in test match cricket. However, including Cameron Green and the empty opening spot at the top post David Warner’s retirement made him think of pushing himself up the batting order. However, Smith opening the innings in test match cricket didn’t come off as a great decision. Smith hasn’t played in the whites and the famous Baggy Green since late January 2024 with Australia having no test matches scheduled in their calendar. However while playing against India, it would be interesting to see if Smith opens the batting or shifts back to any of numbers 3, 4 or 5 in the middle order. FYI – In the 18 test matches Steve Smith has played in the Border-Gavaskar series so far, Steve Smith has successfully piled 1887 runs at an ultra impressive average of 65.06. What’s Bigger – Border-Gavaskar Trophy or The Ashes? The intensity of the India-Australia rivalry has arguably reached the same level to that of the intensity of the England-Australia rivalry. While many believe that The Ashes being the oldest rivalry is cricket’s greatest showdown, some say that the Border-Gavaskar rivalry is the most fierce one due to the intense battles between the two cricketing powerhouses. Well, therefore we leave the answer to this question up to you. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
