What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump to the head, a jolt to the body, or a blow to the head. It can disrupt the brain’s normal function, leading to a range of symptoms.

How Does it Happen?

Concussions often occur in sports that involve physical contact, like football, soccer, hockey, rugby, boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), and other combat sports. They can be caused by:

  • Direct hits to the head: When your head gets hit by something, like a ball, another player, or a punch.
  • Sudden stops or starts: When your head is jerked back and forth quickly, like in a car accident or a sports tackle.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Headache: A common symptom, it can be mild or severe.
  • Dizziness or light-headedness: Feeling like you might fall over.
  • Nausea or vomiting: Feeling sick to your stomach.
  • Sensitivity to light or sound: Feeling bothered by bright lights or loud noises.
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things: Having trouble focusing or remembering things that happened recently.
  • Confusion or disorientation: Feeling confused or not knowing where you are or what’s happening.
  • Changes in mood or behaviour: Feeling irritable, anxious, or sad.
  • Sleep disturbances: Having trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
  • Balance problems: Having trouble walking or staying steady.
  • Ringing in the ears: Hearing a buzzing or ringing sound.



What to Do if You Think You Have a Concussion ?

  • Stop the activity: If you think you might have a concussion, stop playing and rest.
  • Tell someone: Let a coach, parent, or teacher know that you don’t feel right.
  • See a doctor: It’s important to see a doctor to get checked for a concussion.



Treatment for Concussions

  • Rest: The most important thing is to rest both physically and mentally.
  • Gradual return to activity: Your doctor will help you slowly start doing things again.
  • Medications: In some cases, medications can help manage symptoms like headaches or nausea.



Preventing Concussions

  • Wear protective gear: Helmets and other protective equipment can help reduce the risk of concussions.
  • Learn proper techniques: Learning the right way to play sports can help prevent injuries.
  • Follow the rules: Playing by the rules can help reduce the risk of concussions.
  • In combat sports: Proper training, technique, and protective equipment can help minimize the risk of head injuries.
