Odisha, the heartbeat of global hockey, is buzzing with excitement as it readies itself to host the FIH Pro League 2023-24 from February 3 to 25.
With just two days to go, the buzz is real. Teams from China, USA, Netherlands, and Australia have touched down in Bhubaneswar, getting into the groove for what promises to be an epic showdown.
Ticket sales, both online and offline, have kicked off, prompting a surge in excitement among hockey enthusiasts who eagerly await the opportunity to witness high-octane matches and rally behind their favorite teams. The cities of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, firmly established as hockey hubs within the state, are currently immersed in a feverish atmosphere of hockey anticipation.
The Sports and Youth Services Department, in collaboration with various government departments and Hockey India, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a seamless and unforgettable experience for both teams and fans. Every detail, from infrastructure and safety to transportation, accommodation, and hospitality, has been meticulously planned to guarantee the success of the event.
Vineel Krishna, Secretary of the Sports and Youth Services Department, expressed his excitement about the return of international hockey to Odisha. He stated, “It is one year to the Hockey Men’s World Cup, and it gives me immense pleasure that once again we will have an international hockey tournament at both our venues, Kalinga Hockey Stadium, Bhubaneswar, and Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Rourkela.”
Krishna added, “The Women’s team will not only be making their comeback to the Pro League but will also make their debut in Rourkela. Meanwhile, for the Men’s team, these matches will be crucial in their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics. I’m confident that they will give their best and enthrall the passionate hockey fans of Odisha.”
The upcoming mini-tournament will showcase both the Indian Women’s and Men’s Hockey Teams. The Women’s team, led by Savita, is set to make a comeback to the FIH Pro League, engaging in battles against the USA, Netherlands, China, and Australia at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium from February 3 to 9. Subsequently, they will debut at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela from February 12 to 18.
Conversely, the Men’s team will face off against formidable opponents such as Netherlands, Spain, Australia, and Ireland during their home matches from February 10 to 16 in Bhubaneswar. The action will then shift to Rourkela for the return fixtures, scheduled between February 19 and 25.
As Odisha prepares to write a new chapter in its rich hockey legacy, fans and players alike eagerly await the commencement of the FIH Pro League, promising a thrilling spectacle and unforgettable moments on the hockey fields of Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
