In a thrilling match against China at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium, Bhubaneswar, Salima Tete marked her 100th appearance for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. Hockey India took a moment to celebrate this milestone, recognizing Salima’s incredible journey since her debut in 2016.
Known for her lightning pace, Salima’s hockey saga began in the 2016 Test Matches against Australia in Melbourne. Over the years, she has not only set up numerous goals for her teammates but also netted 14 goals herself.
The Jharkhand native achieved Olympian status at just 19, being part of the historic squad that finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The invaluable experience propelled her growth, earning her the title of Rising Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 in Muscat, where India claimed third place.
Salima, a livewire on the field, captained the team that secured a commendable fourth place at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2021 in South Africa. Her pivotal goal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games’ bronze-medal match against New Zealand remains etched in history as India’s first official victory over New Zealand.
Adding more feathers to her cap, Salima played a crucial role in India’s victory at the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022 and clinched a bronze at the Hangzhou Asian Games in October 2023.
Her standout performance came at the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023, where Salima scored 5 goals in 7 matches, earning her the Player of the Tournament title. Beyond her on-field exploits, Salima’s leadership extends off the field, as she was appointed as an AHF Athletes Ambassador in March 2023.
