In an exciting development, Hockey India has unveiled the 24-member squad for the upcoming FIH Pro League 2023-24, with a fresh mix of experience and young talent ready to represent the country. The tournament will witness the Indian Women’s Hockey Team in action during the Bhubaneswar and Rourkela legs, scheduled from 3rd to 9th February and 12th to 18th February, respectively.
Taking on the challenge, India will face formidable teams including the United States, the Netherlands, China, and Australia twice each across both legs. The campaign kicks off on 3rd February with a clash against reigning Asian Games Champions, China.
The team, led by experienced goalkeeper Savita, includes a dynamic lineup featuring Bichu Devi Kharibam as the second goalkeeper. The defensive unit comprises stalwarts like Gurjit Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, Udita, Ishika Chaudhary, Monika, and Jyoti Chhatri.
In the midfield, the team boasts a talented group with Nisha, Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, Neha, Navneet Kaur, Salima Tete, Sonika, Jyoti, Baljeet Kaur, and Sunelita Toppo. The forward line is set ablaze with the likes of Mumtaz Khan, Beauty Dungdung, Lalremsiami, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Vandana Katariya (Vice-Captain), and Sharmila Devi.
Savita, the experienced goalkeeper, will lead the team as the Captain, while the role of Vice-Captain will be shouldered by Vandana Katariya, a veteran forward. This leadership duo brings a wealth of experience and skill to guide the team through the challenges of the FIH Pro League.
Expressing her thoughts on the squad selection, Indian Women’s Hockey Team Chief Coach Janneke Schopman stated, “We have a few youngsters coming in for the FIH Pro League 2023-24. The league is of immense importance to us as the champions will secure their spot in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. We will look to build upon the team chemistry and the squad is looking forward to facing some of the best teams in the world, in our backyard. The aim will be to begin our campaign on a strong note and continue to improve during the League.”
