Bricks And Speed: Formula 1 Goes Full LEGO In Miami

On May 4, Sunday at the Miami International Autodrome, the 20 Formula 1 racers were spotted driving full sized Lego replica F-1 cars. These were electric cars, and there were 10 of them, one each, for the 10 F-1 teams. From the defending champion Max Verstappen to the seven-time winner Lewis Hamilton, everyone wore a smile as they slowly drove their cars on the track.

Why F-1 racers drove the Lego cars?

The parade of the Lego F-1 cars was part of the partnership between The Lego group and Formula-1 which was announced last year. More such parades have been planned for the upcoming Grand Prix races of this season.

“Launching in 2025, the world of Formula 1 will come alive in LEGO brick form through an exciting new product range that will feature the F1 teams, as well as engaging content for fans and families across LEGO Group digital platforms and a strong presence at Formula 1 events, with fun fan zone activations throughout the season.” Formula-1 said in a statement when the deal was announced last year.

More about the F-1 Lego cars?

According to the Formula-1 website, a team of 26 people that included designers, engineers and Lego builders were involved in putting together the 10 Lego cars. It took over two years (22,000 hours to be exact) for the team to build these cars. All the cars were built at LEGO Group’s Kladno factory, in the Czech Republic.

Every car is built with almost 400,000 LEGO bricks and weighs around 1,000 kg. The top speed of these cars is 20kmph.

Anything for F-1 fans from The Lego group?

While the Lego Group provided the F-1 teams and its racers with colourful full sized Lego replica F1 cars, the Danish toymaker has also promised a whole range of products for F-1 fans as well. A separate page on The Lego’s official website has been dedicated only for F-1 Lego sets. These Lego sets include LEGO Technic and LEGO Speed Champions ranges. The toymaker believes these sets are “perfect” gifts for F-1 and racing car enthusiasts.
