CVC Capital Partners To Offload Majority Stake In Gujarat Titans; Adani and Torrent Groups in Talks

CVC Capital Partners is reportedly looking to sell a majority stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Gujarat Titans, according to a report in The Economic Times. The Luxembourg-headquartered private equity firm is in discussions with the Adani Group and Torrent Group to transfer control of the franchise, which is currently valued between $1 billion and $1.5 billion. CVC Capital to Retain Minority Stake CVC Capital, which purchased the Gujarat Titans for $745 million in 2021, plans to retain a minority stake in the team. The move comes as the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) lock-in period, which prevents new teams from selling stakes, is set to end in February 2025. Gujarat Titans: A Rapid Rise in Value The Gujarat Titans franchise, based in Ahmedabad, is only three years old but has already achieved decent success, including winning its maiden IPL title in the IPL 2022 season. The franchise’s rising popularity has significantly increased its market value, making it an attractive acquisition target for major conglomerates. Adani and Torrent: Ahmedabad-Based Contenders Both Adani and Torrent Groups are based in Ahmedabad. The Adani Group, which has already made a couple of investments in cricket, including owning the Gujarat Giants franchise in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and participating in the UAE-based International League T20 with their team, Gulf Giants, had previously bid Rs 5,100 crore for the Gujarat Titans in 2021 but was outbid by CVC Capital. In 2023, Adani secured the WPL franchise, Gujarat Giants with a top bid of Rs 1,289 crore. Torrent Group’s Potential Cricket Debut Torrent Group, although yet to enter the cricket arena, is showing interest in acquiring the Gujarat Titans. The move would mark Torrent’s debut in the sport. CVC Capital’s Diverse Sports Portfolio CVC Capital’s investment portfolio extends beyond cricket. The firm holds stakes in various sports entities, including LaLiga, Premiership Rugby, Volleyball World, and the Women’s Tennis Association. The potential sale of a majority stake in the Gujarat Titans aligns with CVC’s strategic management of its diverse sports investments. As negotiations progress, the cricket community keenly watches the potential shift in ownership, anticipating the impact on the franchise and the broader dynamics of the IPL. Sachin Tendulkar, one of cricket’s greatest players, captained the Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2011. During his leadership, the team won 32 out of 55 matches. Dwayne Bravo had a very brief role as captain in 2010, leading the team in just one match, which unfortunately ended in a loss. In 2013, the legendary Ricky Ponting captained the team for 6 matches, winning half of them. Rohit Sharma is the standout captain in Mumbai Indians’ history. From 2013 to 2023, he led the team in 163 matches and secured 91 victories. His impressive leadership role took Mumbai Indians to new heights. Rohit’s legacy can be called as a different gravy. The Hitman delivered 5 titles, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and in 2020 respectively, with his astute leadership at the Mumbai Indians. Kieron Pollard also contributed as captain between 2014 and 2021, leading the team in 9 matches and winning 5. Suryakumar Yadav had a perfect record in his brief captaincy in 2023, winning the only match he led. Fans expect him to replicate his winning record as he now has been assigned as the in charge of the Indian T20I team. Lastly while Hardik Pandya took on the captaincy in 2024, leading the team in 14 matches. Despite his best efforts, the team won only 4 of these matches. Apart from his leadership, Hardik’s contributions both to the Indian Cricket Team and to the Mumbai Indians have been vital over the years. The all-rounder was Rohit Sharma’s deputy at the Indian Cricket Team during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Hardik also has been assigned the leadership role of a vice-captain for the Indian Cricket Team in the past. Special Mention – Jasprit Bumrah Jasprit Bumrah has been the leader of the Mumbai Indians’ bowling group for almost a decade now. Bumrah also has gotten a taste of an international captaincy post representing the Mumbai Indians. He last led the Indian side against Ireland in 2023. Bumrah first led the Indian Cricket Team during India’s 4th rescheduled test match against England in 2022 where regular skipper Rohit Sharma had to sit out due to COVID19. Bumrah did a phenomenal job during his first outing as a captain. There is no doubt that he learnt and developed his leadership skills at the Mumbai Indians. Just as they say, birds of the same feather flock together. Mumbai Indians’ Legacy of Leadership Most of the players who have led the Mumbai Indians, at a certain stage in their career have led their international sides as well. And this isn’t just a coincidence. It’s the grooming they have done over the years that have reaped with the results. Overall, the Mumbai Indians have always been successful in producing not only quality cricketers but also outstanding international captains. With the MI trio on the leadership responsibilities all set to lead the Indian Cricket Team in Sri Lanka, the series would be an interesting one to watch out for. Suryakumar Yadav vs Hardik Pandya: A Captaincy Tug-Of-War

The race to take over the reins from Rohit Sharma as Indian Cricket Team’s T20 Captain has taken an unexpected turn, with Suryakumar Yadav now emerging as a strong contender. For the past two years, it seemed almost certain that Hardik Pandya would be promoted to the role. Hardik has led India in T20 matches during Rohit’s absences since the 2022 T20 World Cup. He has also been captaining IPL teams like Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians for the last three years. As India’s vice-captain and a star performer in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Hardik seemed the obvious choice. However, things have changed with Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach. Suryakumar Yadav’s candidacy is now being seriously considered. The decision will be announced along with the squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series, which includes three ODIs and T20Is. This announcement will be crucial, as it will determine who will lead India when they defend their T20 World Cup title on home soil in 2026. Player Matches Played As T20I Captain Matches Won As T20I Captain Matches Lost As T20I Captain Win Percentage Matches Played As IPL Captain Matches Won As IPL Captain Matches Lost As IPL Captain Win Percentage Hardik Pandya 16 10 5 62.50% 45 26 19 57.7% Suryakumar Yadav 7 5 2 71.42% 1 1 0 100% Hardik Pandya’s Strengths Hardik’s extensive experience as vice-captain and his role as a regular IPL captain make him a strong candidate. He is one of only four Indian captains to win the IPL and narrowly missed winning a second title in 2023. Hardik Pandya’s Weaknesses Despite his success with Gujarat Titans, Hardik had a disappointing season with Mumbai Indians in 2024, where the team finished last. Additionally, his need for regular rest to manage his workload could be a drawback for a permanent captaincy role. Suryakumar Yadav’s Strengths Suryakumar Yadav is one of the world’s best T20 batters. As India transitions after the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, Suryakumar stands out as a guaranteed starter in the shortest format, making him a strong candidate for captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav’s Weaknesses Suryakumar’s lack of captaincy experience is a major concern. He has only captained an IPL team once, and his stint as Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy captain in 2015 ended poorly when he resigned mid-season. Who is the Better Candidate for India’s T20I Captaincy? Based on conventional logic, Hardik Pandya seems the clear choice due to his experience as vice-captain and IPL captain. Historically, Indian cricket has preferred promoting the vice-captain to the captaincy role for continuity. If tradition holds, Hardik’s appointment should be straightforward. However, it’s important to note that exceptions have been made in the past, such as when MS Dhoni was chosen over Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag for the 2007 T20 World Cup captaincy. If Suryakumar Yadav is appointed captain, it will likely be influenced by head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has long believed in his leadership potential. Gambhir made Suryakumar vice-captain of Kolkata Knight Riders back in 2015, recognizing his potential even before he became an IPL star. There’s also a case to be made that Hardik might perform better without the pressures of captaincy. Throughout his tenure as captain, whether for India or in the IPL, there has been criticism that he hasn’t maximized his own potential, particularly in terms of his batting style and bowling decisions. Ultimately, the decision will shape India’s strategy and leadership as they look ahead to defending their T20 World Cup title in 2026. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
ENG vs WI: For The First Time Since 2012, England Will Play A Home Test Without Either James Anderson Or Stuart Broad

England have named their lineup for the second test match against the West Indies at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham starting on Thursday, 18th of July, 2024. Fast bowler Mark Wood has been recalled in place of James Anderson who called time on his cricketing career last week following a massive victory against the West Indies at the Lord’s. Wood missed the first Test after being part of the England squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June. The 34-year-old has taken 108 wickets in 34 Tests and will form a pacey pairing alongside Gus Atkinson, with Chris Woakes the other specialist seamer. England Squad For The 2nd Test Match Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt) Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir. England Without Anderson And Broad Indeed, this will be England’s first home Test without at least one of Anderson or Broad in their side since 2012. Anderson and Broad, who together claimed 1,308 wickets, have exited the test match cricket scene in back-to-back summers as England moves forward. In the 138 Tests where they both played, they took over 1,000 wickets, with Anderson securing 537 and Broad 502, at an average of 26.73 combined. Anderson achieved 26 five-wicket hauls in these matches, compared to Broad’s 17. Notably, Broad’s career-best figures of 8-15 against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2015 were achieved without Anderson in the team. Click here to read more on James Anderson’s legacy with the ball. England Without Anderson And Broad England’s effort to find replacements for the Anderson-Broad duo will start at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham as the Three Lions face the Caribbean in the second test match of the English summer. Well one thing remains sure, filling these big boots is certainly going to be the real test for England. England have a couple of fast bowling youngsters in the pipeline and coach Brendon Mccullum has a major task on his to-do-list. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Not Hardik, Suryakumar Yadav To Be Named Indian Cricket Team’s T20I Captain

Suryakumar Yadav is set to be appointed as Indian Cricket Team’s new T20I captain, succeeding Hardik Pandya, the current vice-captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Suryakumar will take over from Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from T20Is, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, after leading India to a triumphant victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean last month. HARDIK ON THE HELM Despite Hardik’s experience as a captain—having led India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is, and also captaining Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL—fitness issues and workload management have been factors against him. Since the beginning of 2022, Hardik has played in only 46 of India’s 79 T20Is. SURYA’S SUCCESSFUL CAPTAINCY RECORD On the other hand, Suryakumar has a solid track record in leadership. He has captained Mumbai in domestic cricket and recently led India to a 4-1 series win against Australia in the T20I series last November, followed by a 1-1 draw in South Africa. His consistent performances have made him a key player in India’s T20I squad. WHO IS A BETTER CAPTAIN? He is completely fit and available for the three-match T20I series and was supposed to lead the side but there is a very strong feeling that SKY would be the potential leader not only for the Sri Lanka series but till the 2026 World Cup,” The T20Is in Sri Lanka will also mark the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s new coach, taking over from Rahul Dravid after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
