Jay Shah Elected as New ICC Chairman, Set to Usher in a New Era for Cricket

The 35-year-old Jay Shah created history when he was elected as the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary is all set to take over as the new ICC Chairman, starting from December 1, after Greg Barclay. Shah will have a three-year term but is allowed to extend his tenure for another three years. Unopposed Election Marks Shah’s Rise Shah was elected as no other nominations came in against him. The ICC also confirmed he was the sole nominee, with a couple of sets of nominations coming in for him by the 16 existing directors of the ICC. According to the regulations of the ICC, the candidate need not file the nomination papers, and thus it was pretty easy for the election of Shah himself. From BCCI to ICC Shah, who assumes the new assignment in the ICC, has got to go out of BCCI as secretary-a position he has held since 2019. The first major job for Shah as ICC Chairman is to appoint a new Independent Woman Director in place of Indra Nooyi after the latter completed her recent tenure. He will also have to deal with the issue of Disney Star seeking a renegotiation of the $3 billion broadcast deal. Besides, his other immediate task will be finding an adequate replacement for his stint with the BCCI. A Vision for International Cricket Growth In his maiden statement as ICC Chairman-elect, Shah outlined a future vision for the sport at large, with particular emphasis on the sport’s impending inclusion into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shah was all ears over the fact that the opportunity to come would prove pivotal in cricket’s attempt to spread its wings around the world. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.“ Innovative Leadership for a New Era Shah said that new ideas and innovation have to be embraced to increase cricket’s popularity across the world. He even considers the inclusion of cricket in the Olympics to be a moment when the growing graph of cricket began. “While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways” added Shah. A New Chapter for the ICC The ICC hailed Shah’s tenure thus: “Shah’s election marks a new chapter for the ICC as it seeks to expand the game’s reach and continue its evolution on the global stage.“ As Jay Shah prepares to take on this prestigious role, the cricketing world will keenly watch how this vision shapes the future of the sport. Common Sports Injuries and How Sports Science Helps to Prevent Them

Sports injuries are common at all levels of athletic participation. Understanding these kinds of injuries and appropriating the techniques of sport science can reduce them markedly. Five common types of sports injuries and ways in which sport science can help prevent them are discussed here. 1. Sprains and Strains Sprains are stretches or tears of the ligaments, while strains affect muscles or tendons. These are common in sports that involve quick movements, like soccer or basketball. These could be prevented with proper warm-up exercises, flexibility exercises and strengthening. The science of sports insists upon dynamic stretching before performance and strength training to support the muscle and its ligament. 2. Fractures Bones can fracture in any case of high-impact collision or even just a fall. It can be prevented by improving bone density with proper nutrition, including calcium and vitamin D, along with strength training. Sports scientists call for techniques of land and fall appropriately, hence minimizing risks of fracture. 3. Dislocations These are the forceful displacements of bones from their usual positions and hence are common in contact sports. The use of protection equipment such as braces and pads, and focusing exercises on enhancing joint stability and proprioception, are some recommendations by sports science to avoid dislocations. 4. Tendinitis Generally, this is an injury based on the inflammation of tendons brought about by repetitive stress. Ways to prevent this include optimizing techniques and posture, allowing for reasonable rest, and using sports science techniques to alter the training load and the recovery strategies to avoid the incidence of overuse. 5. Concussions The results of head injuries, such as concussions, are serious. Precautions include properly wearing headgear and encouraging safer playing techniques. Sports science acts to assist in the design of equipment that provides greater shock absorption, as well as designing safe return-to-play protocols. By applying these numerous strategies in training and preparation, athletes will drastically reduce the incidences of these common injuries and substantially improve performance and safety. How The Science Of Sleep Determines Athlete Performance

It is during the big stages like the Olympic Games and the World Cups that athletes compete in a field full of high-stress situations, where sleep makes all the difference. Be it a javelin thrower trying to make that one big throw of his or her life or a shooter attempting a crucial final shot, sleep disturbances can drastically hinder reaction times, decision-making processes and overall performance when Olympics are at stake. Sleep disruptions common among athletes Sleep disturbances are not an unknown commodity for athletes, particularly in events like the Olympics. Jet lag, pre-competition nerves, novel sleeping environments and the overall buzz within an Olympic Athletes’ Village housing more than 10,000 competitors can disrupt sleep. Now, say hello to the ‘Sleep Advisor’ Given the magnitude of these issues, a new concept was sought for the Indian contingent in the 2024 Paris Olympics: the ‘sleep advisor.’ Helping high-performance athletes optimize their sleep patterns helped to overcome potential hurdles toward winning performance. The Relevance of Sleep Training Sleep training’ was, therefore, a matter of paramount concern, and the guidance was well in advance of the games. This helped them adapt sleep habits in order to reduce effects related to time zones and stresses brought about by competitions. Hence, they can put up with disturbances and still regain good sleep patterns despite frequent travels and strenuous schedules. Remaining Competitive Sleep is a modality that should be in constant application with a view to gaining and sustaining a competitive edge. It helps athletes recover their bodies and minds to be prepared for any challenge that may come before them. This approach emphasizes the increasingly vital role that sleep optimization plays in the field of sports science for athletes desiring success at the highest levels of competition. Exclusive: “It would be a tough match playing two Americans at home” – Bhambri on US Open first round

India’s No. 2 ranked doubles player Yuki Bhambri and partner Albano Olivetti will begin their US Open campaign against American wildcards Ryan Seggerman/ Patrik Trhac in the first round. Coming into the final Grand Slam of the season ranked a career-high No. 48 in the world, Bhambri will be playing his first match in nearly a month when he takes to the court at Flushing Meadows. In the absence of matches, Bhambri and Olivetti have been putting hard work on the practice courts. “The only reason we ended up playing one tournament (Washington) during the hardcourt stretch is because we did not get into the other events. The Masters in Cincinnati and Montreal, the cut-offs were too high so we did not get in and the same in Winston-Salem. We had a good training week on the hardcourts though and are now looking forward to playing the rest of the season, starting with the US Open,” Bhambri said speaking exclusively to The Sportz Planet. Bhambri and Olivetti have never played Seggerman/ Trhac before but the Indian is aware that it will be a tough assignment. “Never played them before. This is the first time. From what I’ve read about them, they have been playing mostly on the ATP Challenger Tour but obviously they are top 100 doubles players so they must be good. I’m sure it would be a tough match playing two Americans at home. We are definitely going to try and prepare well and put our best foot forward,” he added. “Definitely a positive sign for Indian doubles going forward” – Yuki Bhambri Bhambri was one of four Indians to feature in the men’s doubles draw when it was released – the second Grand Slam in a row with such a high representation for India (Sumit Nagal has since had to pull out after his partner Yoshihito Nishioka retired from his first-round singles match and withdrew from the doubles as well). The 32-year-old described this as a positive sign for Indian tennis and is confident that the numbers will go up in the future. “I’m sure we are going to see more and more Indians on the doubles draws as well. It’s no coincidence that due to the support the Doubles Dream of India has been providing that a lot of our players have been doing well and reaching career-highs and I’m sure the number will increase from four in the future as well. Definitely a positive sign for Indian doubles going forward,” the Indian commented. Bhambri’s first round match at the US Open will take place on Wednesday or Thursday this week. Women’s T20WC: Venues And Revamped Fixtures Announced

Now comes a big update when the ICC has come up with the updated schedule of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 that will be staged in the UAE. The event was moved from Bangladesh because of the ongoing political unrest but still labeled BCB’s event. Dubai and Sharjah will host the championship in October 2024. Composition of Group Stage and Important Teams The groups remain the same: six-time champions Australia will be placed in Group A against 2020’s runners-up India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, while Group B is prepared with South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, and Scotland. This also means that both groups promise cricketing action with a twist. Australia’s UAE Debut and India’s Opening Encounter Defending champions Australia will make their UAE debut on October 5 against Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka. India, on the other hand, will be starting their campaign on October 4 against New Zealand in Dubai. Two cities-Dubai and Sharjah-are scheduled to host the tournament, while the fixtures are divided equally. Australia will be playing most of their games in Sharjah, while India will be seen in action in Dubai. Exciting Encounters: India vs Australia and India vs Pakistan The most anticipated face-off of the championship will surely be between India and Australia on October 13 in Sharjah, a repeat of the 2022 semi-final. Just before that, India will also meet arch-rivals Pakistan on October 6 in Dubai during a day match. Meanwhile, there is South Africa against England during October 7, at Sharjah in Group B. Semi-Finals and Grand Finale The first semi-final, on October 17, will be given to Dubai if India qualifies for that. Sharjah will host the second semi-final, on October 18. The final is scheduled at Dubai on October 20. Both semi-finals and the final have reserve days to accommodate for weather delays-to avoid a situation the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 faced in June, when this door-closer was seen as a massive oversight. Scotland vs Sri Lanka: Recent Form Both Scotland and Sri Lanka go into this tournament fresh from their participation in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers 2024 in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka remained unbeaten in all the six games played, whereas Scotland chalked four wins en route. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 promises to be an action-packed one, with ten teams in contention for the title. All afternoon games will start at 2 pm local time and in the evening, during the semi-finals and final, games will start at 6 pm. With the shift of the venue now to the UAE, fans worldwide are looking forward to the tension and drama which this competition carries. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
