Reliable Pedometers Technology Still Falls Short In Sports

Pedometers are a popular simple device for recording physical activity, frequently used in fitness programs and in corporate wellness initiatives. The principle is one of movement sensors, recording a “step” whenever the vertical acceleration of the lever arm surpasses a given threshold. Pedometers have been primarily designed to count the number of steps over a day. Fitness experts and health professionals often advise specific numbers of daily steps to meet age-appropriate guidelines for physical activity. How Pedometers Encourage Active Life? Assured achievement of step-count goals has been proven to increase the chances of reaching the recommended physical activity levels. Therefore, pedometers are ideal for encouraging active lives, especially for pediatric and obese participants. Their simplicity and reliability in day-to-day applications make them attractive as an introductory device to monitor fitness. Why Are Pedometers Unsuitable for Sport Competitions? While pedometers are effective for measuring steps, they become less than useful when applied in a more robust athletic environment. Pedometers are incapable of measuring athletic movement, such as changes of direction, which are applied much more during competitive sports. Additionally, they hardly provide an impression of the energy that is being expended, which is an important measure for athletes looking to maximize performance with minimum recovery. Who Should Use Pedometers? This being said, pedometers are an extremely pragmatic tool for most any person wishing to improve or sustain their fitness. For those interested in general activity and walking-based exercise, they provide a reliable and simple instrument with which to monitor activity. However, for athletes or participants in competitive sport, they are better served by more sophisticated tools, including accelerometers or GPS trackers, that can capture the full gamut of movement and performance metrics essential for high-level training. In a nutshell, pedometers are good for monitoring steps while running errands, however they do not have the accuracy and skills one would want for recording professional sports. Being a tool for fitness monitoring, pedometers remain highly essential, however with some limitations among those with the pressure of surpassing athletic limits. The Injury That Made Dwayne Bravo Call Curtains To His CPL Career

Dwayne Bravo, the Champion, unfortunately had to end his Caribbean Premier League (CPL) journey with a groin strain and not with a bang. A man who made death bowling look like a bright sunny day at the beach was cut down cruelly chasing Faf du Plessis‘ shot that seemed to have no end, wrenching agony out of his leg-and every Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) fan. What’s A Groin Injury? In most cases, an injury to the groin occurs through overstretching or tearing of muscles, tendons or ligaments in the groin or the lower part of the abdomen. Most commonly, it is caused by a situation where a muscle is overstretched or subjected to sudden intense force. These are usually conditions that require a sudden change of direction or any explosive movement during a game, such as soccer, hockey, or sprinting. Pain, inflammation, ecchymosis, and stiffness are typical signs that make it so challenging to walk or to participate in athletic activities. The treatment ranges from rest, physical therapy and surgery in extreme cases. A Last Goodbye Bravo had written a grand CPL farewell, perhaps one in which he hit a six off the last ball and moonwalked his way into retirement. We rather got something else – a cameo nobody could’ve predicted. Bravo walked out to bat at number 11, faced just one ball, right on the thigh and then limped off the field. No dramatic finish, no last celebrations. Just a brave, hobbling goodbye that was as heart-wrenching as it was heroic. Bravo’s Trophy Cabinet? Full to the Brim Besides, Bravo has not much to prove anymore. Five titles in the CPL, three of which are with TKR and one with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will speak for themselves. Bravo is the man who quite nonchalantly captained back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. Bravo’s legacy is secured, even if his final bow involved a bat, a thigh guard and an unfortunate limp. True to Bravo style, he may limp off the CPL stage, however his legacy leaves behind a smile that will always be as big as he is. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Concussion Concerns Rising Among Young Athletes

As youth sports get more competitive, we’re seeing a surge in elbow and shoulder injuries, particularly among pint-sized pitchers. The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL)-the superhero of elbow stability-is sporting some serious battle scars, leaving countless young athletes whining in pain. Most of these are overuse and with kids playing more than a game of hot potato, experts raise an alarm call regarding a potential epidemic in the making! Concussion: The Sneaky Villain in Sport Just when you thought the injuries were over, comes the sneaky culprit: concussions. Coaches, trainers and physicians are taking on the role of sleuths, conducting very thorough sideline investigations. They look for clues by symptom checklists and memory games as well as neurological exams to determine whether or not the player has taken one too many hits to the head. Dizziness, headaches and an uncanny ability to forget your favorite pizza topping can all signal trouble. When to Get Back in the Game? The million-dollar question all young athletes want an answer to – when can I play again? Return to play is only safe if all symptoms have resolved and if a qualified healthcare provider clears you for play. Only when an athlete is asymptomatic and has had an opportunity for evaluation by a health care provider should they be allowed to return to play. Neurocognitive testing often is compared with baseline results to determine whether the brain is safe to resume physical activity. Experts note that even though symptoms may recede, the brain is not necessarily healed, so comprehensive evaluation is necessary to avoid further damage. Both elbow injuries and concussions raise just-needed attention to injury prevention and proper recovery protocols in youth sports. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
Rodri’s ACL Injury Rules Him Out Of Premier League 2024-25

Manchester City midfielder Rodri could miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season after he suffered an injury to his knee on Sunday, in the Premier League match against Arsenal. The Spanish star, who had only just returned from a hamstring injury, was withdrawn after only 66 minutes. Reports on Monday confirmed that he had suffered a blow to his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). What Is an ACL Injury? In fact, when an athlete suffers an ACL injury, one of the knee’s primary ligaments is either torn or sprained. This ligament connects the thigh bone to the shinbone, providing stability to the knee-a stabilizing factor whenever an athlete makes those rapid movements-quick changes in direction and jumping. After the injury, the athlete will often describe the feeling of a sudden “pop” or catching in the knee followed by immediate pain, swelling and a difficult time walking afterwards. Treatment For ACL Treatment for an ACL injury largely depends on the extent of the tear. Mild cases can recover by resting and using exercises in physical therapy. More severe tears however, like Rodri’s, often can’t heal and must be treated with surgery. Surgeons replaced the damaged ACL with a graft from inside the patient’s body. Rehabilitation is slow and generally takes up to 6-12 months of rehabs before the player can return to action. Blow for Manchester City Rodri’s injury is a massive setback for Manchester City, whose season already had all the struggle they need to go through. Rodri was unavailable for Manchester City’s opening two matches of the campaign with a hamstring issue and has only managed 66 minutes of football this season prior to the latest injury.
