Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari Formula One car, F2001, was sold for an eye-watering sum of $18.17 million at an auction on Saturday, May 24. RM Sotheby’s, a Canada-based car auction company, held the auction of the iconic car in Monaco ahead of the weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.
The German F-1 legend has used the F2001 to clinch the Formula One World Title in 2001. Interestingly, Schumacher had won the Monaco Grand Prix with the car that year. F2001 has now become the most expensive Formula One car driven by Schumacher to be sold at an auction.

The previous most expensive Formula One car driven by the seven-time champion to be sold at an auction was the Ferrari F2003. That was was sold for $13.2 million at an auction in Geneva in 2022.
F2001 is now the fourth-most expensive Formula One car sold at an auction. The list of the most expensive Formula One cars sold at an auction is topped by 1954 Mercedes W196R Streamliner. In February this year, the car, once driven by Formula One legends Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, was auctioned for $52.52 million. It thus became the most expensive Grand Prix car ever sold.
Mercedes’ W196R and W04 are the second and the third most expensive Grand Prix car ever sold. While W196R was sold for £19.6m, W04 was bought for £15.1m in 2023.
Schumacher, 56, remains one of the most celebrated drivers in motorsport history. He has not been spotted in public since his December 2013 skiing accident that left him with a severe brain injury.
