SportSci Summit 2024: Spotlight on Understanding Athlete Necessities

Anuradha Khole emphasizes the crucial role of rapport in sports nutrition for personalized plans and overall athlete well-being.

The Sportz Planet– SportSci Summit 2024, Season 1, held at Radisson Blu, Mumbai International Airport, was a landmark event aimed at advancing the understanding of sports science. The summit brought together leading experts to discuss various aspects of sports science, with a particular focus on the often overlooked area of nutrition and mental fitness in athletics.  Among the distinguished speakers was Ms. Anuradha Khole, the founder of Anusattva. She is a renowned Sports and Clinical Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Nutrigenomic Counselor, and an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer. Anuradha Khole: Leading the Way in Sports and Clinical Nutrition Ms. Anuradha Khole emphasized the importance of nutritionists building a strong rapport with athletes to effectively address their concerns and provide tailored nutritional advice. She said, “It is important for a nutritionist to build a rapport with the athlete and understand their concerns, listen to them, what are the exact problems and then go ahead with the suggestions.” The Importance of Building Rapport with Athletes 1. Personalized Nutritional Plans Building a rapport allows nutritionists to gain deeper insights into the athlete’s lifestyle, preferences, and specific needs. This understanding enables the creation of personalized nutritional plans that cater to the unique demands of each athlete, ensuring they receive the most effective guidance for their performance and health goals. 2. Trust and Communication Establishing a strong relationship fosters trust, which is essential for open and honest communication. Athletes are more likely to share their true concerns, struggles, and feedback when they trust their nutritionist. This transparency is crucial for identifying underlying issues and making necessary adjustments to their diet and overall nutrition strategy. 3. Addressing Mental and Emotional Well-being Nutrition plays a significant role in an athlete’s mental and emotional well-being. By understanding the athlete’s mental state and stressors, nutritionists can recommend dietary choices that support mental health, enhance mood, and improve overall psychological resilience. A good rapport ensures that the nutritionist is aware of these factors and can address them effectively. 4. Holistic Approach to Performance Building rapport allows nutritionists to adopt a holistic approach, considering all aspects of the athlete’s life, including training routines, sleep patterns, and stress levels. This comprehensive understanding enables the development of integrated strategies that not only focus on nutrition but also enhance overall performance and recovery. 5. Motivation and Adherence Athletes are more likely to adhere to nutritional plans and recommendations when they feel supported and understood by their nutritionist. A strong relationship motivates athletes to stay committed to their goals and follow the guidance provided. This adherence is crucial for achieving long-term success and optimal performance. Building a rapport with athletes and understanding their concerns is a fundamental aspect of sports nutrition. It ensures that nutritional strategies are tailored to meet individual needs, fostering trust and open communication, addressing mental and emotional well-being, adopting a holistic approach, and enhancing motivation and adherence.  The insights shared by Ms. Anuradha Khole at The Sportz Planet– SportSci Summit 2024, Season 1, highlights the critical role of rapport in optimizing the health and performance of athletes. Paris Olympics 2024: Neeraj Chopra Focused And Ready

Neeraj Chopra prioritizes health, fine-tunes technique, and limits competitions to peak for Paris Olympics 2024 amid injury concerns.

With less than a month left before the start of Paris Olympics 2024, Neeraj Chopra is diligently working away from the public eye, fine-tuning his technique. Concerns have been raised about his limited competition participation this season, but Chopra remains confident in his decision to prioritize his health over frequent competitions. Prioritizing Health Over Competition “This is the time to fix and improve things,” Neeraj told ESPN in an exclusive conversation. He explained that his current training regimen in Saarbrucken, Germany, has shifted to high-intensity sessions designed to peak his performance for the Olympics. “My workouts are less in volume now but will be at a high level, and my body will be at its peak.“ Addressing Groin Injury Concerns Chopra’s main focus has been on reducing the impact on the groin muscle of his blocking leg, crucial for transferring momentum during his throws. A groin injury had sidelined him from the Commonwealth Games last year and resurfaced in May, causing discomfort in his adductor. To mitigate this, he has limited his competitions to just three this year, compared to five before the Tokyo Olympics. Experience Brings Wisdom Reflecting on his journey, Chopra noted that his mindset has evolved since the Tokyo Olympics. “Back then, if I had an entry in a competition, I would definitely go and compete no matter what happened. But now, with more experience, I am better placed to make correct decisions,” he said. This maturity has led him to prioritize his body’s health and pause training if he feels discomfort. Strategic Competition Participation Neeraj Chopra’s selective participation saw him withdraw from the Ostrava Golden Spike in May and skip the Paris Diamond League. His performances at the Federation Cup (82.27m) and the Paavo Nurmi Games (85.97m) were among his lowest since becoming Olympic champion, but these were strategic decisions. “At the Federation Cup, I didn’t really feel I needed to perform. Bhubaneswar’s heat and the travel made it difficult to give my 100%.“ Building Confidence for the Runway The groin injury necessitated a break in his training, however Chopra returned to compete at the Paavo Nurmi Games, focusing on his body’s response rather than the throw distance. “I was slow on the runway compared to my normal speed. I want that speed back and for that, I need proper confidence that I am fully fit.“ Looking Forward to Paris Despite a mixed season, Chopra’s 88.36m throw at the Doha Diamond League ranks #4 globally in 2024, underscoring his potential. He remains positive and enjoys the routine of an athlete’s life, even finding humor in its repetitiveness. “We follow the same routine for a long time and repeat the same things time and again. We workout, eat, hydrate, sleep, and do it all over again. But I enjoy it.“ As Neeraj Chopra continues his preparations, Indian fans can take comfort in his focused and strategic approach, ensuring he will be at his best when it matters most in Paris. A Hero’s Journey: Abhishek Sharma’s Arrival In International Cricket

Abhishek Sharma shines with explosive century, following Rohit Sharma's legacy and setting a template for Indian cricket.

Cricket has an uncanny way of balancing things out, much like life. Abhishek Sharma made his international debut against Zimbabwe on July 6 and was dismissed for a duck. However, just 24 hours later, he transformed from zero to hero by scoring 100 runs in just 47 balls. His explosive innings included seven fours and eight sixes, leaving the Zimbabwean bowlers clueless about where to bowl and what field to set. A Remarkable Acceleration What made Abhishek’s innings truly special was his remarkable acceleration. Initially, he scored 24 runs off 22 balls, but then he blasted the next 76 runs at a strike rate exceeding 300. His century came off just 46 balls, reminiscent of Rohit Sharma’s blistering 92 off 41 balls against Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The ‘Hitman’s’ Legacy Lives On Though Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is, his legacy endures. Abhishek Sharma’s knock bore shades of the ‘Hitman.’ Coincidentally, Rohit’s first international century was also against Zimbabwe in an ODI back in 2010. Abhishek’s father, Mr. Rajkumar Sharma, credited Rohit for his son’s batting display. “The demand of T20 cricket now is to attack from ball one. You have to be brave. Rohit Sharma has shown the way for all the Indian youngsters. The template is set, and I am glad that Abhishek is trying to follow in the footsteps of Rohit,” he told the Indian Express. Following in Great Footsteps In many ways, Rohit was the invisible hand guiding Abhishek as he smashed his way to his first of hopefully many international centuries. Abhishek Sharma had an outstanding IPL season, scoring 484 runs for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Now, it’s time for him to convert that form into big knocks for the Indian Cricket Team. Rohit’s Lasting Influence Rohit Sharma concluded his T20I career after leading India to the title, but his influence on Abhishek Sharma is evident. The ‘Hitman’ departed with the most runs, joint-most centuries, most games, and most sixes in T20Is. If Abhishek can achieve even a fraction of what Rohit has accomplished, Indian cricket will greatly benefit. This probably is the right time for one ‘Sharma Ji Ka Beta’ to take the baton and carry forward from the other ‘Sharma Ji Ka Beta’. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

Paris Olympics 2024: Podiums Made From Recycled Plastic

Paris 2024 Olympics will feature podiums and seats made from recycled plastic by Le Pavé, promoting sustainability and innovation.

The Paris Olympics 2024 is all set to welcome the world from July 26th, 2024 to August 11th, 2024. This will be the first post-pandemic Summer Olympics, featuring 329 medal events across 32 sports.  This summer, the world’s top athletes will receive their gold medals at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games while standing on podiums made from recycled food containers. This innovative approach marks the first time Olympic podiums have been created using 100 percent recycled plastic. The silver-colored podiums, currently being raised across France, were made by a start-up called Le Pavé in a small factory on the outskirts of Paris. Le Pavé’s Journey Founded by Marius Hamelot and Jim Pasquet, Le Pavé started with just three employees. An unexpected call from Olympic organizers led to a significant contract, expanding the company to a staff of 34 and two factories. Le Pavé’s success story exemplifies the Paris Olympic committee’s pledge to make these Games the greenest in history. The company also manufactured 11,000 bleacher seats for the Games, using recycled shampoo bottles and bottle caps. Innovative Manufacturing Mr. Hamelot, an architecture student at the University of Versailles, initially aimed to convert plastic waste into high-quality building materials. He began experimenting with discarded plastic from electronic waste. In 2018, he and Mr. Pasquet founded Le Pavé and developed a patented thermal compression molding technology. By 2019, they received a call from Solideo, the company overseeing infrastructure for the 2024 Games, leading to a contract for producing stadium chairs for the Olympic Aquatic Center and the Adidas Arena. Local Impact and Community Involvement Le Pavé collaborated with 50 local recycling companies to gather used plastic, hiring employees from Seine-Saint-Denis, including those who had been on long-term unemployment, asylum seekers, and former prisoners. The company also involved 1,700 schoolchildren in collecting bottle caps, adding an educational dimension to their efforts. Le Pavé used 100 metric tons of recycled bottles and bottle caps to create panels for the stadium seats and 18 metric tons for the Olympic victory podiums. Expanding Horizons The company is opening a second factory in Burgundy and plans to open two more in western and southern France. Le Pavé aims to create jobs and foster local manufacturing, moving away from the old model of mega factories. Recently, the Élysée Palace installed a decorative wall made by Le Pavé, and the company has projects in the pipeline for major French furniture retailers and parquet-style flooring for homes and buildings. A Legacy for the Future Le Pavé’s work for the Olympic Games represents a significant achievement. “We see that we have an opportunity to build something that will last for years and years,” said Mr. Hamelot. “This is about something that’s bigger than all of us.” The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye

SportSci Summit 2024: Anuja Patel On How Micro-Nutrition Is A Key To Tailored Athletic Performance

Ms. Anuja Patel's insights on Micro-Nutrition highlight tailored nutritional strategies for athletes of different sports and age groups.

The Sportz Planet–SportSci Summit 2024, held at the Radisson Blu, Mumbai International Airport, was a landmark event bringing together leading experts to advance the understanding of sports science. Among the distinguished speakers was Anuja Patel, co-founder of Nutrigetic Wellness, a Performance Nutrition Consultant, and a respected faculty member at various sports organizations. Her insights into nutrition have significantly contributed to the field, particularly her discussion on the concept of Micro-Nutrition. Anuja Patel: A Leading Voice in Sports Nutrition Anuja Patel’s extensive experience in sports nutrition has positioned her as a key influencer in the industry. At the summit, she delved into the nuances of nutritional strategies tailored for athletes. Her expertise encompasses working with diverse sports organizations, where she emphasizes the importance of customized nutrition plans. Patel’s focus on Micro-Nutrition is particularly noteworthy, as it underscores the need for detailed attention to dietary components to enhance athletic performance. Understanding Micro-Nutrition Micro-Nutrition refers to the precise intake of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients required by the body in small quantities. Unlike macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which are needed in larger amounts, micronutrients play a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including energy production, immune function, and bone health. Ensuring adequate intake of these nutrients is vital for overall health and optimal athletic performance. Micro-Nutrition: Tailoring Nutrition for Different Sports The nutritional needs of athletes vary significantly depending on the sport they participate in. For instance, endurance athletes, such as marathon runners or cyclists, require a higher intake of iron to support oxygen transport and energy production. In contrast, strength athletes, such as weightlifters, need increased levels of protein and certain vitamins like B12 to aid in muscle repair and growth. Additionally, sports like gymnastics or figure skating, which emphasize lean body composition, require careful management of micronutrient intake to ensure athletes maintain strength and energy without unnecessary weight gain. This precision in nutritional planning highlights the importance of Micro-Nutrition in addressing the unique demands of each sport. Micro-Nutrition Across Different Age Groups Age is another critical factor in determining nutritional needs. Young athletes, still in their growth phases, require higher amounts of calcium and vitamin D for bone development, along with adequate iron to support rapid growth and increased physical activity. In contrast, older athletes may need more antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, to combat oxidative stress and support recovery. For middle-aged athletes, maintaining muscle mass and preventing age-related decline becomes crucial. This group benefits from increased intake of protein and vitamin D, along with micronutrients like magnesium and zinc, which support muscle function and recovery. The Sportz Planet–SportSci Summit 2024 highlighted the importance of advancing sports science to enhance athletic performance and overall health. Ms. Anuja Patel’s insights into Micro-Nutrition provided valuable perspectives on how detailed and sport-specific nutritional strategies can significantly impact athletes’ performance and well-being.  The Sportz Planet,Atharva Shetye

The Raghavendra Dwivedi Story: From 21 Rupees to India’s World Cup Triumph

Raghavendra Dwivedi’s journey from humble beginnings to pivotal behind-the-scenes figure in India’s T20 World Cup victory.

When India clinched the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, an unassuming man with kumkum on his forehead quietly celebrated on the field. This man, Raghavendra Dwivedi, hails from Karnataka and has an extraordinary story that reflects his determination, passion, and pivotal role in India’s cricketing success. Early Struggles and Determination Around 24 years ago, a young boy named Raghavendra left his home in Kumta, Uttara Kannada district, with just 21 rupees. He dreamt of becoming a cricketer, but a fracture in his hand shattered that dream. Undeterred, Raghavendra decided to carve a new path in the cricketing world.  Raghavendra’s father was vehemently against his cricketing aspirations. This led to a decisive moment where Raghavendra chose cricket over everything else. He left for Hubli, where he lived in dire conditions, including sleeping at the bus stand, a temple, and eventually a crematorium. For four and a half years, he called an abandoned building in the crematorium his home, using a cricket mat as his blanket. A Turning Point Despite the hardships he faced, Raghavendra’s passion for cricket never waned. He began assisting cricketers in Hubli by throwing balls during their practice sessions. His dedication caught the attention of a friend who directed him to Bangalore, where he found a place at the Karnataka Institute of Cricket. Tere, he worked tirelessly, throwing balls to Karnataka cricketers and assisting with the bowling machine. His relentless effort did not go unnoticed. Former Karnataka wicketkeeper and current Under-19 selection committee chief Tilak Naidu recognized Raghavendra’s dedication and introduced him to Javagal Srinath, a former Karnataka cricketer. Srinath, impressed by his sincerity and hard work, invited Raghavendra to join the Karnataka Ranji team. This opportunity marked a turning point in his life. Rise to National Recognition Raghavendra’s journey continued at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where he worked without pay for several years, often going without food. However, his hard work paid off when he completed the BCCI Level-1 coaching course and became a favorite among Indian cricketers who came for practice. His talent was soon recognized by Sachin Tendulkar, leading to his appointment as a training assistant with the Indian Cricket Team in 2011. The Backbone of Team India For the past 13 years, Raghavendra, also known as Raghu, has been a crucial figure in the Indian dressing room. As a throwdown specialist, he has thrown at least 1 million balls during practice sessions. His deliveries, reaching speeds of 150 kph, have honed the skills of players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Kohli once remarked, “Facing Raghu’s 150 kph deliveries in the nets makes the fastest bowlers seem like medium pacers during matches.“ Raghu’s contribution to the team often goes unnoticed, but his role is indispensable. He is known for his speed and precision with the sidearm, making him one of the best throwdown specialists in the world. His dedication and hard work have played a significant part in the success of the Indian Cricket Team, culminating in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victory. An Inspirational Journey Raghavendra Dwivedi’s story is one of inspiration and perseverance. From living in a crematorium with just 21 rupees to becoming a key figure behind India’s World Cup triumph, his journey exemplifies the power of determination and hard work. His commitment to the sport and the Indian Cricket Team has made him an unsung hero, proving that true passion and dedication can overcome any obstacle. In the words of Virat Kohli, “This man has a huge role in my success today, but his hard work sometimes goes unnoticed by the world.”  Raghavendra’s journey is a powerful reminder that behind every successful team, there are individuals whose efforts, though often unseen, are invaluable. Shri Dinesh Lad’s Plea For A Cricket Ground: A Call to Empower Young Athletes

Shri Dinesh Lad appeals to the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi for a proper cricket ground to nurture future cricket stars in Mumbai.

Shri Dinesh Lad, the cricket coach and mentor to India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma, has made a heartfelt appeal to honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Mr. Lad, who has spent the last 28 years of his life coaching young cricket talent, is asking for a proper cricket ground to help develop future cricket stars. For nearly three decades, Mr. Lad has dedicated himself to coaching at Swami Vivekananda School in Borivali without charging any fees. Under his guidance, 92 students have represented Mumbai at the state level, and ten have played for Mumbai in the prestigious Ranji Trophy. Despite these successes, Mr. Lad faces a significant challenge: the school’s cricket ground is too small for proper training and development. “I appeal to honorable PM Narendra Modi to grant me a good cricket ground,” Shri Lad said. “I have been working in the cricket coaching field for the last 28 years, and I have never expected anything while working nor did I ever take money from anyone. The school that I coach has had 92 students play for the Mumbai state and ten of them played for Mumbai in Ranji but I don’t have a ground. The ground in that school is tiny.“ The lack of proper playgrounds in Mumbai, a bustling city with limited space, is a pressing issue. This scarcity hampers the growth of children and aspiring athletes who need adequate facilities to hone their skills. Mr. Lad’s plea highlights a broader problem faced by many coaches and young sports enthusiasts in the city. “I have applied for a ground in Borivali, and if I get that ground, I promise you I will be able to give more kids to represent the nation,” Mr. Lad continued. His commitment to nurturing talent goes beyond his school. He has adopted ten children from rural areas, hoping to give them the same opportunities he has provided to his students at Swami Vivekananda School. “If I get a ground, I would be able to work better,” he added. Shri Dinesh Lad’s appeal is a reflection of his dedication to cricket and his commitment in fostering new talent right on the grassroots level. His request for a cricket ground is not just a personal need but a crucial step toward providing young athletes with the resources they need to succeed. The lack of playgrounds in Mumbai, over the time, has become a major barrier that has been preventing many children from reaching their full potential in sports. By granting Shri Lad a cricket ground, the Government would recognize his invaluable contributions to Indian cricket and invest in the sport’s future. Providing adequate training facilities is essential for developing young athletes who could represent the nation on the international stage. Shri Dinesh Lad’s appeal to Prime Minister Modi highlights a critical issue facing Mumbai’s sports infrastructure. His selfless dedication to coaching and commitment to nurturing young talent make his request a deserving cause.  Addressing the lack of playgrounds and sports facilities is vital for the growth of cricket and other sports in the city. It is an investment in the dreams and aspirations of countless young athletes who, given the right opportunities, could become the future stars of Indian sports. The Sportz Planet Desk,Atharva Shetye
