As Formula Medicine gears up to work closely with cricketers for the next few weeks, Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli, CEO of Formula Medicine agreed for an email interview with The Sportz Planet. In the interview he gave insights into the origins of Formula Medicine to the plans of working closely with cricketers.
Excerpts of the interview are below:
Can you share the inspiration behind the founding of Formula Medicine and how its philosophy has evolved since its inception?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: I started with my experience with athletes in Formula 1 in 1989 as a Sports Medical Doctor. At that time, there was virtually no medical culture in motorsport, and no one had studied the physical and mental demands placed on drivers. Driven by passion and curiosity,I launched a research program, starting by monitoring drivers heart rate during Grand Prix. What began as medical support gradually evolved into a comprehensive performance philosophy, combining scientific research with physical and mental training. Research results have enabled the development of innovative training methodologies that have established Formula Medicine as a world leader in motorsport and allowed it to work with elite athletes across many other sports disciplines worldwide.
What distinguishes Formula Medicine’s approach to athlete preparation from traditional
training methods in sports medicine?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: What distinguishes Formula Medicine’s approach is its focus on completeness, technology, and innovation. We are a multidisciplinary team of over 100 professionals, made up by doctors, physiotherapists, athletic trainers, psychologists, and nutritionists. Our approach is holistic, addressing not only physical training but also mental preparation and medical check-ups for well-being and top performance. Formula Medicine also includes an independent in-house research and development department that develops biomedical technologies, which the staff utilizes to create innovative training methodologies.
How does Formula Medicine integrate medical, psychological, and athletic training to create a holistic development program for athletes?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: We combine medical, psychological, and athletic training to optimize overall performance— not just physical fitness. Each athlete begins with a comprehensive medical assessment, followed by a personalized program that integrates physical conditioning with cognitive and mental training.
In what ways do your medical check-ups and physiotherapy sessions complement the mental and physical training components?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Medical check-ups and physiotherapy sessions are essential to monitor overall health and prevent injuries. These interventions help tailor physical training to the body’s needs and support the mind by reducing stress caused by pain or physical limitations. This way, the effectiveness of both mental and physical training is enhanced.

What are the key components of your athletic training programs, and how are they tailored to meet the specific needs of different sports disciplines
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Formula Medicine’s athletic training programs are based on a method we developed using the metaphor of a podium, where each step represents one of the three fundamental components essential for every athlete: aerobic endurance, neuromuscular coordination, and general and sport-specific strength. Just like a podium cannot stand without all three levels, an athlete’s performance relies on the balanced development of these core elements. Working in site with sport specialists can help achieve individual training performance.
How do you address injury prevention and recovery within your training regimens to ensure athlete longevity
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Injury prevention is addressed through a well-balanced program that includes warm-up routines, joint mobility, functional strength, and sport-specific exercises targeting the athlete’s technical movements. Preventive protocols focus on high-risk areas, emphasizing core stability, neuromuscular control, and proprioceptive training.
Recovery is supported through active rest periods and careful load monitoring to ensure long-term athletic performance and career longevity. Before we talked about the holistic approach and the importance of working together through different areas, by doing that we make sure that the opinion of different specialist (such as doctors, physioteraphist, psycologist, trainers and nutritionist) are aligned to fulfill the same goal.
What cutting-edge technologies and equipment does Formula Medicine utilize to assess and enhance athlete performance?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Formula Medicine employs a range of cutting-edge technologies and equipment to thoroughly assess and enhance athlete performance. Central to our approach is the Mental Economy Gym®, the world’s first mental training center, equipped with specialized devices that allow up to 24 athletes to train simultaneously while undergoing real-time cognitive and physiological assessments.
The innovation is represented by the integration between mental performance, evaluated through proprietary software, and the biometric parameters, recorded by electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart rate monitoring. Analyzing the relationship between performance and psycho-physical energy expenditure, Formula Medicine has developed proprietary algorithms that allow the measurement of the brain efficiency. The final goal is to train the athletes to improve mental performance reducing the waste of energy, which means the optimisation of the mental resources.
Formula Medicine has worked with athletes across various sports, including motorsports and tennis. Can you share some success stories or notable collaborations?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Formula Medicine has had the privilege of working with top-level athletes across a wide range of sports. In motorsport, we have supported champions of both past and present generations, including Jean Alesi and Charles Leclerc.
Our expertise has also extended beyond racing: we’ve worked with Jannik Sinner, the current world No. 1 in tennis, and Mikaela Shiffrin, the most decorated alpine skier in history. Our multidisciplinary approach has also benefited Olympic medalists in swimming and fencing, as well as Alessia Zecchini, the world record-breaking freediver.
These collaborations reflect the adaptability and effectiveness of our integrated method, which combines medical science, physical training, and mental performance to help athletes reach their full potential— no matter the sport. From today, we are proud to count among our great athletes the Mumbai Falcons cricket team.
How did the partnership between Formula Medicine and SoBo Mumbai Falcons come about, and what drew you to work with a cricket franchise in India?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: We initially worked with the Mumbai Falcons through our involvement in motorsport. When they approached us to support the athletes of the SoBo Mumbai Falcons cricket team, it was a great honour.
We were very excited to begin working with a team in such a beautiful sport—cricket— which is not widely practiced in our country. This partnership represents a wonderful opportunity to expand our expertise and bring our multidisciplinary approach to a new and dynamic athletic discipline.
This marks Formula Medicine’s first foray into Indian cricket. How are you adapting your motorsport honed methodologies to suit the demands of T20 cricket?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: We joined a well-structured athletic and physioterapic staff and we are bringing our ability of communication in the team. We are bonding with the different areas in order to provide the best support needed.
We are listening, learning and adapting our methods by focusing on common aspects between motorsport and T20 cricket, such as pressure management, neural efficiency, and rapid decision-making. We use our Mental Economy Training® as the main protocol, maintaining a scientific and personalized approach to optimize athlete performance.
Additionally, working in synergy with the training staff of the team, we tailor physical training programs to meet the specific demands of T20 cricket, ensuring athletes are strong and agile.
Can you walk us through the high-performance training initiative you’re implementing with the Falcons?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: We are bonding between the areas, providing personalized insights and integrating with our
famous Mental Economy Training.
Formula Medicine is also known for bespoke endurance protocols. How are these programs being customized for the physical demands of T20 cricket—short bursts of high intensity, agility, and injury prevention?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: We are firstly here to support the athletes integrating our skills with the experience of the Team Athletic staff which is really professional and well structured. Cricket endurance requirements are specific for the sport and the work needed to be done it’s tailored on specific needs.
Do you see this collaboration opening doors to wider engagement with Indian sports beyond motorsport and cricket?
Riccardo Ceccarelli: Certainly, this collaboration opens exciting possibilities. We would be very interested in
expanding our involvement beyond motorsport and cricket to engage with a wider range of Indian sports. India has a rich and diverse sporting culture, and we see great potential to bring our holistic approach to help athletes across different disciplines achieve their best performance.
We know that we can continue to do good outside from motorsport and the atmosphere around the cricket here looks very exciting for our team.
